I have a 1998 manual transmission Tacoma, in the last 18 months the vehicle has chewed through 4 speed gears (pn: 33403-39515). Realize it's only a piece of plastic inside the transmission but curious how the first gear last over 230K miles and in the last 20K I've been through 3 about to be 4.

Is the likely a culprit bad bearings or worm gear within the transmission? Local Toyota is zero help on the issue and local mechanic suggested transmission shop. I'm not opposed to the transmission shop route just don't want to go to someone unless I can turn them down the right path (I've paid enough to let people guess at this issue).
