    Hello everyone,

In mid-January, I went to the dealership and had my first oil change and service done when my truck had around 6,000 kilometres on it. Today, I realized that the oil cap has been missing since then, and my truck has now reached 8,200 kilometres. I contacted the dealership, and they have agreed to see me tomorrow. However, I am concerned that this may have caused damage to my car. The dipstick still shows full surprisingly, but the reason I noticed was oil was in the wheel wells and on the truck doors.

What do you think about this situation? Thanks for any pointers in advance.

It will be fine, the engine has outward pressure, not vacuum in the oil sump so it didn't likely absorb anything damaging.

Did it leave a mist of oil in the engine bay at all?

It's still upsetting your first service was screw up.

I wouldn't worry about it if the oil level is still full. I'd definitely get some free compensation from the dealer tho (Like free detailing if there is oil mist in the engine bay or on the truck anywhere)

Should be fine, but take this as a lesson to open your hood monthly.

You might consider an after- market cap that is more outstanding or different from stock. I have a red billet TRD cap from Etsy or somewhere similar. The guys changing the oil always comment on it. Less chance they would forget to put it back on??

I haven't checked mine since I changed it last year. At any rate the truck will tell me if somethings wrong....it's got enough sensors, and computers.

there was another thread a month or two ago with the same issue. you're OK as others mentioned. needless to say at this point but whenever possible, always check what a dealership does to your truck.

i had a small oil leak at the first (and only) visit for an oil change, and they did not tighten the clips back on the air filter box or, put the red cover back on the positive battery terminal.

free oil changes or not, my dealer is the only one within 150 miles and won't see my truck again unless it is for a recall or warranty issue.

I beg to differ. More chance they steal it and put an OEM cap on.

Thanks for all the input, I will update the thread with the outcome from the dealer.
    • The truck is at the dealer, hopefully, they take responsibility for their work. They will be detailing it they said (the least they can do).
    • Yes, I haven't checked under the hood since January, we can agree to disagree on if that should have happened or not. I will say however, I'm bummed at myself that I didn't pop the hood in that time - definitely a lesson here.
    • My biggest concern is I live in Vancouver Canada and it rains a lot here so I'm worried about rain or debris getting into the engine, the spout is in a spot just asking debris to fly in.

    EDIT: Grammar.

I check the oil when they're done with it. Right in the pick up area. I also look underneath the truck. Don't care what they think either.

They did this to me as well. Its so stupid because they did it at a service interval where an oil change wasn’t even needed, absolutely dumb.

I just got a new cap, took off and cleaned out the filler neck and put it back together.

Well when I discovered mine it was out in the middle of nowhere off-roading. So i put. A rubber glove to cover the opening and tied it off until i could get home. The glove was being slightly sucked in indicating a slight vacuum. There was also no oil in the engine bay.
