State specific. Here in Okie land there is no sales tax savings for trading.

Small threadjack ... I-20 in Louisiana, almost every single foot, qualifies as "off roading".

As a follow-up, I stopped at the first rest-top in Texas as I had been driving a U-Haul at sometimes 20 MPH because of the roughness. I made a joke to the attendants about getting west fast in case LA DOT decided to start taking over Texas highways. They seemed very concerned about the implications of that.

plus i assume your state gives the sales tax break and the amount of $$ for your trade in will be deducted from the amount you pay for sales tax for a new truck

    Yeah.
I've lived as an adult in TX, MO, and now AR. Each state has different ways of taxing you. All have sales tax, and all subtract your trade-in value on what you have to pay on vehicles, all have been 6.5% on vehicles. Texas is mostly property tax on land and real estate, no personal property tax on vehicles nor income tax. MO and AR both have personal property and income tax, with much lower real estate taxes than TX. But if you add it all up, it's about the same ratio of tax to income.

Back on topic, I've always traded vehicles in. The savings on sales tax was always worth the difference and hassle of trying to sell to a private party. They want good used vehicles, especially if they can CPO it.

Tennessee you have to had purchased the vehicle you are trading in in the state. if you brought it in from out of state and registered it in Tennessee then try and trade it in you don't get the sales tax break.

    Yeah.
That's interesting. I traded in a truck I bought in TX in MO, and a truck I bought in MO in AR. Both subtracted the trade-in, but both had been registered and property tax paid at least once. Not sure how it would work in MO if you registered and never paid property tax. In AR, you pay a year in arrears, so there's no way you can get out of paying at least once if you've registered it.

By having to live in this terrible state. I miss the 303 but it got too expensive to live there.

Most of the time, you will get a more for a private party sale than a trade in amount. But you may have to deal with a bunch of tire kickers and low ballers. That has been my experience.

Selling to private party certainly pays but must way hassle vs reward factor. It certainly pays to do some research and to get multiple appraisals/offers to leverage whoever you sell/trade with. It always amazes me the different offers you get depending on where you go etc.

Depends on how much the convenience of a new truck right now is worth to you. Wait a very short time in this market to sell it privately and have more money or have less money and trade it in.

Guy in Mechanicsville VA right down the road from me put his outside his house with a for sale sign on it. This was last Monday. I stopped Friday to look at it and he came out and said it was already sold he was taking the sign off. We shot the shit for a few and as I was leaving the new owner drove up to get it. These things don’t sit long in this current market. Just my 2 pesos.

Here in NY, we pay an 8% sales tax. When trading a vehicle for another one, the trade value isn't $1 it is $1.08. Depending on the trade amount, that is a considerable chunk of change.
