OME 887 with Bilstein 5100

Resurrecting this old thread for sake of anyone buying the 5100s with 887s assembled from @Wheeler's Off-Road Inc ; make sure you email them after you order and confirm where they will set your circlip.

I ordered mine from wheelers for my 2nd gen access cab 4X4 M/T knowing that the 887 would give 3" at the most but probably a bit less. On wheelers website they only give one option for the 887 saying its a 3" lift:


I assumed this meant it was on the lowest seat and they were assuming the highest you could end up with is 3".

I received the order and installed on the truck and only then did I realize it was on the third perch of the 5100:


I emailed them about the mistake and they said that it was correctly set up. They said to get 3" out of the 887 for a second gen you need to have it set on the third perch, otherwise it would be a 2" lift. If that were the case I don't know why they wouldn't offer a 2" lift on the 887 dropdown options...

From reading through all the information about OME coils on 5100s I thought it was common knowledge to set on the bottom.

Anyways, they're back off the truck now and getting ready to head to a shop to get them compressed and the perch moved down, pretty annoyed I had to pay for assembly just to go pay another shop to compress and fix them for me.

 

Does anyone have this setup with dakars in the back?
I bought my setup from Headstrong and got the HD dakars and my rear height is around 25.5 inches and the fronts are at 22 roughly.
I have had this setup for over a year so I don’t think the front will settle anymore. Looking for options to actually get level. My stock leafs were completely broken, that’s why I got the dakars

 

I’ve got dakars (CS047R), they’re about 10 years old but haven’t settled much since I originally installed them, maybe a 1/4” at most. I don’t remember my numbers but I measured a few months ago and I was still 2.5”+ over my stock measurements. They originally gave 2.75” of lift, as advertised. Truck sits level.

 

Finally got around to finishing suspension. I now need a steel bumper.

 

I’m looking to find a solution to get closer to level with the setup I have or at least not spend too much more. The OME 887’s I have have settled to less than a 2 inch lift and the HD dakars lifted my rear close to 4 inches.

I can put a 1/2 spacer in the front and take a leaf out of the rear, but I got the HD dakars because this is my work truck and I load racks with ladders. The dakars do not hold a 600lb load and stay the same height. With 300lbs in the bed the back is gets close to level

 

Sorry to bump an old post, but I have the exact same size tires and I’m about to have a shop install the exact same lift you have. I just have a handful of questions. Has it settled since then? Did you get the taco lean? Did you leave the overload in on the AAL? Also how is the ride compared to stock? Thank you for your time

 

Bilstein 5100 & OME 887, what about the rear?

I’m so close to clicking “checkout”, but I can’t decide on a lift. The shop is highly recommending a full rear leaf spring (OME EL122RA) for 2.25 in the rear. They’re saying the ride quality will be great too. I’m trying to keep cost down a little bit. I don’t hardly ever tow,
just occasionally load up for camping. I was leaning toward 1.5 blocks. I want just a bit of a lift and good ride quality for my daily driver. What would you recommend? I’ve considered AAL as well, but that also may not be necessary. Do I just send it with the whole new leaf springs? 2021 Tacoma sport 25k miles. Thanks!

I’d say go with the better components and install everything yourself to keep costs down. Lots of resources on this site for the install, plus folks that are happy to walk thru it with you.

 

Here are my thoughts.

1st - order your own lug nuts. $55????? Amazon will save you $25
2nd - get BFG's through Costco. You'll save $300 + free install + future flat repairs + free rotation for the life of the tires.
3rd - Get premium wheels. Check out SCS, RWW, ICO wheels. You'll save. Costco will install as-well.

Their lift rate seems fair. As for wheels & tires, you can easily save $700-800 by purchasing through other outlets.

 

Thanks for the info. I did find the wheels through another site and they were cheaper.
basically what I’m hearing though, is to have them only do the suspension work, but shop separately for wheels/tires/lugs.

Great information here. I got 887 installed with 5100 on “0”. After install, going over speed bumps or through gutters, I’m getting a “dull popping sound. It seems like it’s happening not when the coils compress, but it seems more like when they are extending on the rebound. (Sorry, my terminology probably sucks). I didn’t do the install, first time truck/lift. So I don’t know what to look for when inspecting. I’ve posted a few pictures. One thing that stood out to me was the “top hat” missing on one of the sides, is that normal? Thanks for any advice/help. I have a video of the sound, but not sure how to upload video if it’s possible.

Dude wtf!!! Your shock is loose! Do not drive it unless you tight those top 14mm nuts!!!!

 

Dude both sides are the same! Who worked on your truck?! We got to put them on blast level 3!!!!!

 

Both sides have "top hats" (the fitting at the top of the shock/spring assembly which is also the part that bolts to the vehicle chassis), but one side is missing the upper damper/washer and you should take it back to the installer to get that fixed ASAP. The "popping" sound is probably the nut on the shock piston impacting the top hat fitting as the suspension re-extends after compressing on the bump, which is something that could eventually damage the shock, the fitting, the nut, or any combination of those parts.

Also, like Ricardo said, the three nuts that are holding the whole assembly onto the truck should be tight on the side that does have the damper/washer in place.

It might not be a bad idea to go to a different shop to fix all that, and maybe also have them check out the rear install while they're at it since whoever installed that for you does seem to have made critical mistakes on both of the two corners you posted pics of here. I don't know that it's safe to assume they got the other two corners right.

 

You should be asking for an installation fees refund and possible damage of a shock. I’m still impressed by the lack of care. Wow!

So it’s safe to assume, that if installed correctly - there shouldn’t be any sort of noises like that during a break in period or anything?
