I have 16x8 +0 on my truck now with 265/70R16’s for winter. I’m looking at 17x9 +0 with 265/65R17 and the seller is telling me they will rub because I do not have a lift.
I used the online calculator and both combinations are exactly the same size. The only thing the size calculator doesn’t take into consideration is the rim width.
Is there something I’m missing or is the seller just trying to cover their butt?
    TIA

It’s the same size, the diameter of the inside of the tire is just different so it can fit the different size rim.

Same size tire. Your rim will be different though from an 8” wide to 9” wide

That's exactly what I was concerned about. The online calculator tool doesn't have any input for the width of the wheel. If the dimensions of the two set ups are identical (except for wheel width) on paper, common sense says they should fit the same?
I just don't want to get stuck with them if they rub because once they are mounted they are not returnable.

A 9 inch with 0 offset should be ok. It wouldn't be my choice though. I'd personally stick to between 7-8 inch wheels.

The 9” wheel will sit out further by approx 13mm or 1/2”. You should be fine but imo I’d run a 265 on an 8” wheel.

I was just looking at photos of 265's on a 9" width and they do look a bit stretched..... now that I talk this out I realize the need to stick with 8's.
    I still don't think a 9 would rub tho....not with a 265. Thanks for the input.

The inside edge of a 9” wheel with 0 mm offset will be in the same location as a 7” wheel with 25 mm offset. Stock is 17x7-30. So you are slightly further away from the UCA than stock.

If you are dead set on 17x9 +0. I have had mine for 2 years on stock suspension with 265/70's with no issues.
