Hello everyone, new to this website I recently bought a 2008 Tacoma 4.0 with a automatic transmission and I just made my first hard stop in traffic today due to someone cutting me off and I noticed that about 15 seconds after stopping the truck jerked forward it felt as if someone rear ended me but no one did. Does anyone have any advice on what this could be from? Thank you guys in advance

Nothing to panic about. Make sure the leaf springs are not broken and the ubolts are torqued to spec and don't worry about it. I found mine were loose from the factory on 2012 and torqued them to 95 Ft Lbs and haven't had any issues since.

    15 seconds after you stopped?
Did this happen right when you let off the brake pedal?
Or were you still pressing the pedal.

The AC compressor kicking on in the 4.0 will cause a feeling of someone tapping your rear bumper like you described.

No sir this happened while at a complete stop. I just went out for another test drive and did a hard brake on purpose just to see and it did it again it feel’s almost like a transmission issue as if I braked to hard and the transmission didn’t have time to down shift if that makes any sense

I have this on my 2015 Tacoma with 88k miles.

I’ll drive on the highway, get off and pull up to a set of lights. Normal braking…..then once I stop, about 3-5 seconds later, there is a slight kick….

    my g37 did the same.

Not sure, but my theory is that when you break, your truck tries to stay in 2nd gear in case you don’t stop all the way…..but once you stop completely….the trucks realizes that and shifts down to first.

Yeah, when the compressor kicks on, it ups the idle speed.
Mine does it, others have reported the issue also.
The fix is to press the brake harder:thumbsup:

It’s possible the transmission fluid is low.
I kind of remember another member here having the transmission “bang” into gear when stopping.
The fluid was low, after getting it back to the correct level, all was good.

You’re right on the fix lol. But Mine does it even when AC isn’t on. But it does always correspond to an increase in idle speed/RPM when stopped in gear. Doesn’t do it when I coast to a stop in neutral. I thought it was just increased torque from the trans downshifting and higher rpm.

the power steering pump also has an idle up switch, FYI

My theory. When hard breaking, the front squats, the rear lifts, then once stopped the suspension levels out but the wheels are stopped putting odd push and pull loads on the suspension. Then when you let up on the brake pedal, those loads are released so you could feel a jolt or hear creaking.

Except OP says he isn’t letting off the brake.
It happens completely stopped. I suppose the suspension might settle, but I would think it would be a hard as OP says?
