Thanks for the great suggestions! I am definitely looking for a rack system of sorts for this upcoming summer.

If you have any specific needs, let me know. We make a lot of different racks that are compatible with your cover.

I just ordered the 18" but in aluminum to carry a kayak and a canoe. I'll post some photos once it arrives and I install it.

I would love to see some pics! Thank you! Also why did you choose the aluminum over the steel?

Do you have diagrams of the different components with their measurements? For instance, how tall are the base side rails? The 18” rack looks more like 20-21” from the Tacoma bed plastic to the top of the rack.

Weight savings and lack of rust (I live in the northeast).

    You are exactly right.

That said, we are using an upper level coating system on these new racks. All the components are sand blasted, zinc primed, then powder coated. They will never rust in any conditions.

We started using this system on our PRO-X crossbars over a year ago, offering a 3 year rust warranty. So far we haven't had a single complaint about rust.

I tossed one of the PRO-X uprights in the ditch in front of my house and left it there, buried in salt from the plows all winter, and it looks brand new still.

In my experience the problems start to arise when the coating is chipped/scratched. In the past, only a regular coating of cosmoline has been able to stop rust to an adequate degree.

Again, you are exactly right. Once bare steel is exposed, it's game over.

But that's the beauty of the zinc primer. The zinc is bonded to a sand blasted surface, you have to really clobber it to remove that layer. So even if the powder coat gets chipped off, the zinc primer remains to do its job.

Up here in the PNW, the humidity and moisture definitely will rust metal that is not protected. I'd be inclined for the lighter aluminum, but steel might be the better choice for me.

One last question. How easy/difficult is it to pull the rack off the rails? I like to pull mine off if I need to do truck stuff or I'm done camping for the season. 4 bolts and the Hoister in m y garage and its off.

Sorry for the delayed response, somehow I missed this post.

Removal is still very easy, but it's six bolts now instead of four.

Isn't there a lip that holds the vertical parts into the rails?

Or are you meaning the 6 bolts that go into the side rails inside the bed?

You should offer bolts with little knobs on them to make removal easy without tools. My home made bed rack I had to keep a 10mm with me when I needed to remove the cross bars.

But it would be nice to quick remove the rear most bar to fold up my cover for my boats or ice fishing shack (seat sticks up in just the rear of the bed).

This looks really cool. Is it pretty straight forward to remove the cross bars while leaving the rails in place? I have a Bakflip MX4 and I'm thinking that I would only want the cross bars on when I'm hauling bikes or something like that.

I may have misunderstood your post. Are you asking how difficult it is to remove the bed racks legs from the Voodoo Rail?

If so, it's pretty easy, just a lot of bolts (I like to use a 1/4" drive Milwaukee electric ratchet).

That's what I initially thought you meant. lol

For reference, this is how it attaches to the bed (this is on a Gladiator, but the attachment is the same for a Tacoma).
