Have a very strange issue today.

I live in South Florida so we’ve been dealing with heavy rains the last couple of days and some minor flooding on the roads. Nothing I’ve never driven through before.

I was driving all day, multiple stops, no issues at all. I jumped in my truck after lunch and the truck won’t turn over. Headlights look normal, dash lights up, and central locking are all totally fine. Cabin fan and music even turn on. Despite all that I though it might be a low battery even though the battery is about 4 months old, so I hooked it up to the jump pack for 20 mins and still nothing changed.

It doesn’t even try to start which has me confused, not even a click or anything… just no response when I put my foot on the brake and press the start button…. The only thing I’m getting is the battery charging system notification which is what I usually see when I have the car on accessories for a bit (which I see a lot of people say is normal).

Could it be the starter? Any other obvious things I might be missing? A fuse maybe? I had to leave quickly for an appointment so I took an Uber and will head back in a couple hours. Any recommendations for fixes or places to check would be very much appreciated

Totally forgot I hooked up my BlueDriver. Here are my codes. When I get back I’ll clear them and see what comes back. Anything obvious anyone see as the likely culprit? The a/c system cut off yesterday in a puddle, which makes me think it got we and shut off to protect its self.

my thought is something got we that was not suppose to.

I always thought that was an issue for older batteries and/or batters after a day of heavy off roading

With those codes, I'd check the external harnesses to see if anything snagged them?

    Also, there was this recently:

It ended up being a loose pin on an ECU that only showed up with thousands of miles on the Taco.

thanks for the recommendation, I’m experiencing a no crank no start which seems slightly different than his issue… but I’ll certainly check around the harness.

I’m dreading the idea of it being a starter issue… if I remember correctly, I would need to take the skid plate off, which at the very least will be extremely annoying, by myself on a wet truck, on a wet day…

Have you tried in neutral or move gear selector, to make sure it's in park fully. Just a thought.

Any add ons? Look at fuses if so. But also check fuses.

    Doesn’t hurt to double check

I've had a very similar issue. Check all the fuses in the fuse panel under the driver's side dash. In my case the Steering Lock 20 amp fuse shorted and popped.

I’ve got a light bar and a sound system… Nothing looked loose or corroded… Fuse box is certainly on the checklist when I get back in a few minutes.

Agreed, but we don't get many like this around here. Maybe one or two others that are not the battery.

Problem solved… kinda. The problem was/is a shifter issue. The moment I started focusing on it I was realizing that the shifter wasn’t allowing itself to slide all the way back to its full park position. After sliding it back-and-forth a few times I’m able to get there but only if I hold the shifter in position… I’m guessing my linkage has gotten thrown off. Time to investigate that….

Good ol neutral safety start. See it on older cars, not so much newer. Glad you got it fixed. Was dealing with a similar issue on my FJ80 but narrowed it down to voltage drop to the starter.

Yea it’s pretty surprising, I’ve had the truck for a while now and never experience that. It’s also deceiving because your instinct is to wobble the shifter left to right to make sure your in park but the issue I’m experiencing is about the last 5-10% of forward movement. Lesson learned.

Yea for sure… I’m guessing going through lots of puddles up to about 12+ inches deep must have washed away the lube that was there thus causing the issue.
