They are almost always computer controlled anymore. You can try and bypass the computer and run it manually, there is nothing stopping that, but to do it the "factory" way would require you to modify the computer which is neither cheap nor easy.

Ironically modifying the car hardware is generally fine, modifying the computer to achieve the same goal is generally illegal.

Car ownership has always been about an agreement with the manufacture, you agree to buy what they are offering. If they don't offer that feature then you didn't agree to buy it regardless of if it is in the car or not. Nobody bats an eye if the $15,000 "Full Self Driving" is "in" the car but you have to buy it separately, or even just Navigation on your GM/Ford/Toyota, we bought the hardware for that too, its already in most of them, so is the software. Does that fall into the same boat?

Isn't being happy the point? It's my money, if I'm happy with how it's spent then why would anything else matter. It's not like you can take any of it with you when you die.

Rather own nothing and be happy, than own it and be unhappy.

Not sure how that was a response to my comment though.. it's not like I'm advocating for a lease or subscriptions.

I can't recall buying a piece of recorded music as an adult, what ever it was it must have been a compact disc way back in the last millennium. Never subscribe to any streaming service, no digital radio service, never downloaded music.
