New to all this and trying to understand what the advantage is in going from the stock Tacoma wheels to aftermarket ones. Is it just style or does it also provide a functional benefit (for off-roading or anything else)?

    It stimulates the economy. Lol.

99.9% for looks. Going up to 17” gives more tire options (and also allows you to fit bigger brakes). Few get bead lock wheels for off-roading and so they can change their own tires.

    Lighter
Wider to accommodate wider (285+) tires
Less offset to clear spindle gussets and aftermarket lower control arms
Certain Method wheels have "beadgrip" ribs in the bead seat area to enable lower pressures (single digits) off-road without popping a bead.

Depends on the tire size you want to run. 255/85-16 works with your stock wheels. 285/75-16 needs wider wheels with lower offset (like ET0).

@mayorcesar the advantage to going aftermarket in some cases, weight reduction for better gas mileage and wider stance for better stability. Even with 16inch wheels. Going with more wheel and less sidewall gives better lateral stability in corners. It also makes it easier to single out your truck in the Home Depot parking lot.
