The factory added a number of things I haven't seen on any new OR

Just curious about the build history of my new truck. I had been looking for a MT for awhile. Most are already sold before they hit the dealer floor. When I see them, if the dealer has posted it, I peruse the window sticker. I have long seen the usual stuff - some trucks are very basic. Others have one or two enhancement packages - with deluxe seats, audio, maybe the blind spot warning stuff.

Anyway, I found a TRD OR last week at a small dealer 200 miles from me on the Oregon coast. I drove down and snapped up this ELM beauty and am very happy with it. I got it for msrp for just over 43k; but it came with none of the usual packages. The factory added a number of things that I haven't seen on any new OR - automatic or manual. It came with the white, aluminum TRD skid plate, the TRD enhanced exhaust system (gives the truck a nice throaty note when reved up, the bed extender gizmo, TRD Pro intake filter (just the filter, not the CAI box, the consul gun safe, and the usual stuff like floor mats, LED lighting, Predator tube step etc.

How did all that stuff get on the truck at the factory? It looks like someone's custom build that they refused when it came in. I didn't think Toyota did custom builds anymore.

Oh, one more thing, behind the back seat was a small white box with a gray TRD cue ball shifter which is a nice improvement over the stock weird-shaped leather one. That shifter knob never made it to the sticker at all - but it was there and I am enjoying it.

No they are definitely factory installed. The dealer was puzzled about it as well. I was please. If I had to spend the extra money at least it was for shit I might have wanted.

Prior to getting my TRD OR, AT…I seen a TRD OR at another local dealer that had the TRD skid plate, TRD exhaust, and the TRD filter but not some of the other items you mentioned. It was a normal build from the dealer and not a custom or special order. Dealers will do stuff like that to appeal to buyers. This dealer had like 36 different Tacoma’s coming in at various times.

Those are "port installed" options. Some serve a purpose (skid plate), other options people wait to buy if ever (or buy better options from RCI) like Predator steps.

Port-installed options are one of the higher-profit items for a dealer ... cheap to install so their pockets are lined faster. Dealers either configure or get configured with a laundry list. "Laundry list" is a scam played by some less-reputable dealers (one in my town adds $7000 lift kit to SRs with even an OR-class locker) others just pad just a little and a few do not preconfigure but will take anything the factory sends them to keep customers coming in the door and feeling less abused.
