New 4x4 Tacoma Has Vibration When Braking

Old thread but, 2022 TRD sport 4x4 6MT and I’m getting this shuddering, even in neutral. 1700 miles.

 

it's either warped rotors/drums, tires out of balance, or the suspension isn't right.
that's the usual stuff that causes vibration while braking. could be wheel bearings too, but that would make noise while turning.

what else could it be?

 

I had a vibration braking from 55-35 MPH. Installed new rotors and pads this week and the vibration is gone.

The rear drum needed adjusted. a shoe was sticking or something. covered by warranty of course.

 

My first new Toyota - 2022 TRD OFF Road (1500 miles on it since August of 22) - Shudder is really bad. The dealer said the brakes were "over-tightened" by the factory causing the rotor to warp. They 'replaced' the rear rotors. Brake shudder was gone for a little bit but is now back after a trip of about 50-60 miles. Also noticed a shake at around 35-40 mph that might be related (?). Just took it back in again today and they are balancing the wheels and 'couldnt reproduce' the brake shudder. I told them to try harder. What gives? Why is this happening to a brand-new, garage-kept, treated like a princess, taco? My 2001 Tundra has none of these problems even at 300K miles and she has seen some sh!t. Does anyone have smart questions to ask and good things to look for to make sure this thing gets resolved?

 

Go for a ride on a quiet road Twist you parking brake lever clockwise gently pull the lever on. Do you feel a vibration? Yes wrapped drums. Try it again in forward gently apply the brakes does it shake? Front rotors.

All this points to exactly what I found to be the cause on my 2019. I have had the axle tsb done and that fixed one problem only to leave the rumble strip. Fast forward a couple years later I install a lift and ECGS bushing. Slightly worse now. Install the drop bracket spacer, no change (this actually solves nothing but rather pushes things into a more marginal range of operating tolerance).

The solution ---> AXLE SHIMS!! The angle of the front half of the rear drive shaft and the pinon should be parallel. This lets the u-joints cancel out as they are at the same running angle. On mine and other Tacoma's that I look at are typically pointed downward slightly. Friends that dont have the issue have visually better alignment. When I measured my angles I was 5.5 degrees down relative to the front shaft. I installed 4 degree shims and is now better than stock. Likely 2.5deg shims would result in much smoother running.

 

I gave up taking mine back to the dealer and complaining and them throwing new rotors and drums at it which did not fix issue, plus my rear factory drums were rusty and after I got some new aftermarket wheels with more open spoke design it drove me nuts to look at.

Pulled all the OEM brakes off and replaced it all with quality Japanese aftermarket stuff , Rotors , Drums , Shoes , Pads .... my rumble strip went away 100% and never came back , i've got 20,000 km on that setup , I wish I did it sooner.

 

Japanese aftermarket? Where did u get those or what was the brand name?

 

I will confirm tomorrow , been a year or so since I put them on.

I wanna say Akebono ? But could be wrong.

Did you have a lift that caused the driveshaft/pinion mismatch? I just have a single helper spring in the back and to line up my pinion and rear shaft I will need surprisingly large shims. I thought the general rule was 1 degree for each inch of lift but my helper spring definitely hasn't lifted the back more than 1-1.5 inches.

 

The vibrations were there since before the lift. The lift just increases the front and rear operating angles and make it worse.

You may not have far to go, it's the pinion axis that needs to be online withe the front shaft. This will make the u joint angle at each side approximately the same angle.

 

Right now my front shaft is 5.1 degrees down and my pinion is 3.8 degrees up with 2 degree shims already installed.

 

It might be hard to get bette that 1.3deg misalign as when I was buying shims it was 2 and 5deg increments.


Fwiw when I was researching all this, recommendations for range of acceptable ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 degrees . I believe I am around 1deg iirc.

 

I guess if I get picky I'll swap the 2 degree for a 3 and call it a day

 

Bringing it back to the issue with shaking while breaking in a brand new 2022 Tacoma TRD-Off Road (less than 3K miles) - 5 visits, multiple test drives and a number of different steps taken by the dealer (Rotors, rear drums, etc....) all to result in....drum roll....

The T-SB-0023-19 issued regarding axles. New axles, shoes, and drums and the problem seems to have resided. They measured and found that they were out of alignment to spec from the factory. Keep in mind this is also after the rear brake was 'overtightened' (from the factory) to the point it burned up. I just test drove it today and it seems to have stopped however...time will tell. We will see if anything else pops up. This is something good to know as it surprised the techs (I am in Montana so there is less volume on overall work compared to some and this is a TSB from 2016-2019) but the when the techs contacted Toyota Service Assistance (TSA), it seemed to be something that is coming up for the 2022s.

Hope this helps someone else avoid the ridiculous stuff I had to go through...all the time spent and head scratching.

 

Taking my 2019 in tomorrow for this issue, will print out the TSB and bring that too.
