As some of you have already heard, one my idler studs snapped due to a fatigue failure a couple of weeks ago.

    The damage:

    20230320_191520.jpg

    20230320_191511.jpg

    20230320_192204.jpg

Removed the end of the stud by welding a nut onto it:

    20230326_121503.jpg

    Somehow the belts didn't snap:

    20230320_185857.jpg

First thing was to get it running, so I put in some short M10 bolts to hold the accessory idlers. @XPOTRPR kindly mailed my some RIK studs, but I ultimately decided to get upgraded studs made from 4140. Had to get a local machine shop to make them, they were only $130 including material (meaning $260 for four, but my friend bought 2 to offset the cost).

    Temporary repair bolt:

    20230326_121526.jpg

    New 4140 studs:

    20230414_153457.jpg

Since my crank pulley and the ribbed idler next to it were destroyed, I ordered new ones. NST crank pulley since this failure is a chance to upgrade. I originally asked for red, but without notifying me, they just sent me purple because red was out of stock. Lol. I like that more because purple is my favorite color anyways. so I'm rather excited about that.

    The parts:

    20230414_153820.jpg

This happened when I was 10 minutes from home, after a long road trip North, so that was lucky it didn't happen on the trip. A tow from where I ultimately went would probably have been $2000 if I decided to tow back to Edmonton. A tow home from a short distance was much preferred. This is the first time I've been towed since buying the truck in 2010!

Also from what I could tell, if the upper stud had snapped, it would have been a lot worse. I'm certain I would be taking the front of the truck apart to get that repaired.

Haven't put these new parts in yet because my w/m system developed some problems - leaking pump seal mostly. More to come on other things I'm fixing while I wait.

So I take it the 4140 is supposed to have better strength/fatique properties than the stock studs? Such a pain in the ass when that bastard breaks.

It should be much better yeah. Conferring with the other materials engineers in my workplace, 4140 would be a relatively good choice. In any case I'm thinking of making those studs a regular maintenance item, perhaps replace every time I do a serpentine belt.

Pain in the ass is right, but in my case it really could have been a LOT worse.

Big improvement. Kind of a pain in the ass but always so worth it in the end.

To all my loyal followers, I did a group buy for upgraded 4140 supercharger tensioner studs. $160 shipped in Canada, $161.80 shipped in the US. If you politely ask I can get you as a late Comer on the group buy.

Get yourself a pair of shiny studs today!

One of my old pumps went bad - leaky seal of some kind. Upgraded to the AN4 pump!

Passenger air bag is on again.

    20230512_185213.jpg

A few years ago when I put the G37 seats in, I threw away everything I needed to keep the passenger air bag active. At the time I was like, "eh, air bags are for squares". But of course eventually I'd be dating someone who wouldn't ride in the passenger seat because the air bag wasn't working.

I ordered the harness, air bag control module and the seat buckle from the dealer (before you make fun of me, I get a discount there because I've been buying parts for 12 years and the same manager is still there and we're basically buddies). I also bought a seat belt end on Amazon to put in the buckle.

The last thing I needed was the sensors themselves which you can't buy separately and the parts guys didn't even have them on their diagrams; they're integrated into the seats. I struggled to find any 2nd gen seats, was basically looking for poor condition ones that someone was selling for pennies. Coming up with nothing, I ran across a 3rd gen seat on eBay - just the bottom frame without any pillows, but it appeared in the photos that the sensors were the same, including the harness connectors.

    20230512_165248.jpg

So after putting everything together, it took swapping the sensors around a couple of times (they have to connect to the correct plug on the harness) and it worked. That was a gamble that paid off.

I ditched all that stuff when I mounted my Corbeau and sold my stock seats. I, too, have sellers remorse because I should have done it the right way from the beginning and now I don't have that unobtanium part (sensors).

No wonder the dude that bought my stock seats was totally jazzed that it was fully complete. He was after the sensors too.

Yeah. One of the most expensive oversights I ever did since I bought most of the parts from the dealership. Good thing I'm middle class.

Well keep your eyes out for a 3rd gen seat in addition to a 2nd gen. I'll have to confirm sometime if the 3rd gen control module works with the 2nd gen setup, it has a different part number on it, but it still connects up to the 2nd gen harness.

I did not install these yet. I can't make excuses... I've lacked motivation for a lot of my truck to-do lists and I had some stuff come up to repair that took higher priority. And there's lots of hockey to watch right now :D. Although chances are just one or two more games and that'll be over :(

Toyota does some funny things sometimes that work in our favor! Kaley asked why I didn't assume that someday someone would be sitting in the passenger seat again... I was like, I guess it didn't occur to me. Since I've been seeing her I continue to discover the breadth of my narcissism :D

At least you didn't go full racecar and junk the passenger seat entirely!

First stage in the URD intake repair, due to chronic meth use the coating on the old intake was peeling and breaking off. Upon further inspection there was no corrosion or wall loss of the aluminum, which is good. I bought a used URD intake off my friend and installed new nipples for the PCV and atmosphere FPR reference.
