While I was under the truck doing a transmission drain/fill this weekend, I gave the drive shaft a good twist and shake. There is some play in the carrier bearing, but I don’t know if this is normal. The truck is a 2010 6 lug with 245k miles. It drives fine, but has a slight shudder upon hard acceleration. Thoughts?

Normal for that mileage probably. I'd repair it before it does even more damage and you need a new driveshaft, differential parts, transfer case parts, etc.. I'm not familiar with the procedure but consider replacing whatever else you can while doing this job, such as u-joints.

If mine was worn at 150k or earlier then yours is worn at that mileage. It’s a wear item.

every vehicle with something like that has it worn out around as early as 100k

Thank you for the replies. I do not know if the carrier bearing is original because I bought the truck with 224k miles on it for my 16 year old. I was hoping someone could comment on whether the amount of movement within the rubber bushing is normal. Perhaps shaking it like that is not a good test. To my surprise, the bushing still has a very soft feel to it, it just allows the shaft to move more than I would have expected with just my hand. It’s not dried out and clunky feel like I would expect with age. I’ll admit, I don’t fully understand how the carrier bearing works. If the bearing is suspended in the rubber, perhaps this is normal.

Not terrible, it should have a bit of movement, but looks to me like that one is starting to go.

Replace it and the u-joints while you're at it. Easy DIY & cheap if you have the tools. I'm in need of doing mine for the 2nd time at 275k.

Do you/he notice a shudder when accelerating at low speeds, especially with a load? If so, that's probably the culprit.

I experience that exact symptom! It is very subtle. If I accelerate moderately hard, there is driveline vibration, similar to the sensation of pulsating brake rotors. I will rebuild the drive shaft next weekend. Thanks again!
