True but I lost my vehicle for two days and they shouldn't have taken the job knowing they didn't have the tools or experience to complete it.

You say this, but it seems you didn't do your due diligence to check the shop out before requesting any work.

I agree the shop should cover it, but for such a small amount it'll hurt them more to leave a thorough review of what happened (setting aside any emotions) for others to read.

    Pay it and move on.

What type of due diligence would I have done? They had good reviews. I don't know about everyone else here but $150 to me is still a decent amount of money.

If it were me I would give them a call and say something to the effect of, "Is there some middle ground we can find here? You worked on the truck and didn't have a puller so things went sideways. I was expecting you all to have the tools necessary to do the job and I was out a vehicle for the weekend. You had the truck in your shop and had to go through the added pain of fixing the mistake. I'd like to give you something for that added effort and time spent but I also was inconvenienced because of this. Can we split the difference since we both lost time and money on this? I'll go in half on the part that was burnt and no labor and we won't worry about the expense on my side of having to arrange a vehicle covering for the mistake."

See what they say to something like that ^ then present alternatives if they are stubborn. When you go to court you can tell the judge you negotiated in good faith and tried to remedy the situation and this will look good for you IMO. My $.02 Shit happens my guy... hopefully when you are the one to cause the shit to happen whomever you report to will give you the same leeway you are giving these people.

What else could have gone wrong? I already bought all new parts. Seal, bearing, deflector, o ring etc..

Yeah, part of that due diligence I was referring to was something along the lines of "do you guys find yourselves having to cut parts off, etc" considering the OP is aware of the condition of his vehicle.

I get the principle aspect of it, but is $150 and all the time and hassle worth standing by that principle? As stated in the quoted message and previously, a bad review detailing this would do much worse for the shop than taking them to small claims for $150 they can easily make up elsewhere. So I guess it depends which principle matters more to you: their integrity and future success or your $150

Regardless, the shop should have informed him of the issues that could arise from their repair, and what parts may be compromised during the process.

If it goes wrong enough, you get a bent axle.
But let’s not get carried away. A backing plate is nothing.
Well, it’s something, but nothing compared to the “what else’s”.

I'd like to hear the other side of the story. Guy brings in a 20 year old rust bucket. Mechanic has to spend 3X longer getting old parts off and damages another 20 year old part that may well have needed replacing anyway. If it were my shop, I'd eat the $150 for the part, but charge for another 2 hours labor for the extra work necessary to repair the rusty old truck.
