Have to verify your mechanic did a compression test and leak down. Plenty of mechanics will throw parts at a problem hoping for it to be fixed. Not like it's their money.

Usually you would be charged for the diagnostic, were you?

Even driving on fumes all the time? I know that creates build up and gunk in the system. And when I googled it, albeit google answers..., it said a misfire could be a result?

I'm not sure. I don't think they did anything to the valves. I got brand new injectors. I forget what it was, but if my engine was a certain type or size, I could afford to have the valves adjusted. If it were a different size, I would need brand new valves, as they couldn't be adjusted....I think that was the scenario?

The 2TR-FE uses hydraulic valve lash adjusters.
You can’t adjust them manually. The engine oil pressure does it.
They typically fail by sticking. When they do, they are usually accompanied by a ticking/tapping noise.

So, the black plastic cover with the Toyota logo on the top of the motor was never removed?

That is the wrong answer entirely. You need a mechanic who is going to inform you on what they are going to do to test it and if you don't know what they are talking about, educate you in their methodology. Especially if you are paying.

A mechanic who is throwing parts at a car in hopes of it fixing the problem without thoroughly testing it first (because there are always some cars that are absolute head scratchers despite testing) is a poor mechanic who should not be trusted for diagnostic functions.

IDK. Like I said, they did diagnostics twice. I'm sure they checked all the above. I never knew to ask any of the above,as I am not knowledgeable in automotive stuff.

Well I am quite sure they just don't throw parts at it and hope it works. This place is one of the most reputable shops in San Diego. Maybe I just don't know how to answer your questions.

If it was, it isn’t anymore.
We’re $1,000 into it and it’s still not fixed.

No, but the mechanic is a friend of mine from surfing. So he is taking care of me via the diagnostics since they can't figure it out, and I've been throwing a lof of money into it. I didn't pay for the last diagnostic, just $500 for the injectors, and $300plus for the labor.

Won't know details until Thursday at the earliest. I take it into the shop that day. As far as the misfire and startup issues....Unless I let my truck warm up completely before I start driving it, it will drive bad down the road, I can feel it bogging. But if I'm able to punch it during that initial time, it starts to run fine. Like I just needed to get some fuel running past something? IDK. But yesterday when I tried to punch it, it immediately jumped into the lowest gear off of maybe 10-15mph....probably cuz the new injectors? But it misfired again when that happened. Weird thing this time though....when I stopped my truck, then started it again, which usually fixes the misfire...I did not have to clear the check engine error. It just disappeared from my dashboard. I usually have to use my OBDII reader and clear the check engine message.

When the truck is idling does the tachometer needle move up and down a little or is it steady?

Well, it definitely doesn't idle like it used to before all this. I guess it moves up and down a bit, not significantly though. It almost feels like the idling was the problem at first, cuz it felt like enough fuel wasn't getting into the system to start? But I would also think they would have looked at that too? I rev the engine to get more fuel into the system when starting it up in the morning for the first time.
