Minimum lift for 285/70R17?

If I want to comfortably fit 285/70R17 on my 2006 tacoma with no trimming at all, how much should it be lifted from stock height?

 

I Would say 6+ inches, but then getting in to drop spindles, etc. $$$$$$

 

I've heard people say 2-3 inches but idk about 6, I could fit like 40s with that lol

 

You really gotta start by doing some homework first, then get back to us with a game plan.

285's aren't straight forward, and lift's don't help.

Cab mount chop, pinch weld mod and trimming some plastic helps.

 

dude... ignore the above.

you can clear those 95% of the way with a 2 to 2.5 inch lift. you might need to trim some plastic and remove your mudflaps, but you should be fine

it does matter what your wheel offset is - ie. if you have wheels that stick out very far, you are more likely to rub - but if you are anywhere in the realm of normal offset, you should be good with a couple inches of lift and some very minor trimming

Please don't take this as harsh, but the more you post the more you are demonstrating your lack of understanding. That is cool though because we all have to start somewhere and you are in the right place. The steering axis is what you will run into issues with 285s which is why the cab mount chop (CMC) is necessary.

You may see some frustrated posts from members just because your question is one you will see very often here and some searching will reveal answers to every question you could possibly think of re: 285 fitment. Head over to the wheels and tires forum and do some scrolling and searching. Start with this video and then do some searching. Don't be worried about the GX he uses, Tacoma is the same IFS platform.

haha man, not sure what to tell you guys. i ran my 2012 tacoma on a 2.5 in OME lift for 3 years, 2 years with NO sway bar. never did a CMC. rubbed on some plastic and had trim to the inner fender, but otherwise no issues. i had an 06 tacoma, 285s, 2" lift, wheeled hard, did keep the swaybar on that one, no issues.

lots of offroading trips. smashing sliders, pivoting against trees and bouncing off rocks type wheeling... i'm sure i rubbed a little at some point, but never noticeable, no chunks out of my tires, etc

not many pictures of my truck in action but here it is a few miles into the woods with some dudes on 37s and 35s including Mike from Resz fab, you can see how much its leaning just sitting there on a slight bank since i ran no sway bar

i do all the work on my trucks. have done cab mount chops and smashed pinch welds - but like i said in my original post, in a 2nd gen tacoma, you can run 2" or 2.5" lift and 285/70r17s, trim some plastic, go wheeling and flex your shit out and have little to no issues.

lot of the guys new to this seem to go overboard with mods only to drive down dirt roads. you do not need to go crazy to run big tires, wheel and have a good time.

let me know if you have any other questions, happy to go into more detail or dig up more videos and pictures of offroading trips... just dont have much on my work computer

Question: if you were to go full lock left or right in that last pic, you would not have rubbed at all?

 

no worries!! nope, no rubbing. i mean... i rubbed on some plastic initially, but that all got cut out. no REAL rubbing on any metal, frame, cab mount, UCAs, pinch weld, etc

wish i had some better wheeling pictures/videos to illustrate this, but i am usually too busy having fun to get pictures

having the right offset wheels makes a huge difference (which i also mentioned in my original post)

 

I’ve seen 33s fit on these trucks with minor trimming and no lift and as stated above, it comes down to wheel offset and investing the time to get it right. There are also skinny tires you can fit much easier but I don’t remember the sizes. It all comes down to how much work you want to do to fit them. Lift doesn’t clear tires. It’s a myth. A bracket drop will let you clear 35s but you won’t be able to flex it out. Spindle drops again will allow you to fit larger tires…but you still won’t have the travel. If you never go off road or just do back roads with very little flex then you’re fine with those set ups. But there is no easy button for actually clearing anything larger than a 32” tire on these trucks.

255/80r17 is a skinny 33" that fits with zero trimming even on stock 2nd gen tacomas
