Anyone here have experience overlanding with a guitar? I'm planning on taking an acoustic on an extended vacation as I travel the backroads and I'm concerned with dust getting into the case. It will be in the Tacoma bed with a tonneau since there is no room in the cab (large dog takes priority). Is this even an issue?
I haven't picked one out yet, but it will definitely not be a well-loved/expensive guitar...so an expensive case would be out of the question as well.
    Thoughts? Advice?

Put the case and guitar into a big lawn and leaf trash bag?

Dang! Simple and inexpensive. I do the inverse as a way of waterproofing my fastpacking set-up....a trash compactor bag inside my back pack.

I'd buy an inexpensive case and then do the trash bag around it as well, prevents damage if it gets moved around

For what you are describing, you might want to consider a Martin Backpacker to save space, and it doesn't sound too bad, considering it's size. Get a hard case for it, and wrap it up as described, above, and you'll be good to go, I think.

Thanks...good thought. I had a Martin Backpacker for travelling, but it's not much good for group scenarios or jams.

I assume the suggestion of the Martin Backpacker was based not just on dust, but on possibly losing a valued possession on backroads. I might make the same suggestion, since the musician is usually the limiting factor instead of the instrument.

But garbage bags inside a hardcase ... maybe a softcase around that. Make the cases and bags black to see when dust is getting close.

    Happy travels!

Not sure what the concern with dust is, you can just wipe it off.

I'd be more worried about rapid changes in humidity when you change elevation and/or travel to different regions.
That can warp your guitar and twist it out of tune. Eventually it can effect the finish.

Otherwise, use a well fitting hard case to protect against knocks and bumps, and you should be fine.
    Rock on!
