Hard to start after pumping gas

Hey guys I just picked up a 2013 Tacoma base model (needed a good work truck). The truck has been awesome but when I put fuel in it doesn’t want to start. Today when I refueled I held the gas pedal down while trying to restart and it done a little better but stalled after I took off. I put it in neutral and it cranked over fine then ran great the rest of the way home. Other than the hard staring it runs and drives great. I did change the gas cap but it didn’t help. The engine and trac of light also came on today. Any advice will be appreciated.

You need to get the check engine codes read...

 

Probably has a leaking purge valve. You'll likely see codes related to evap leak or purge valve performance

Are you topping off the tank after the nozzle clicks off?

 

I don’t tip off the fuel but the previous owner may have. I’ve not owned the truck long.

 

I know if you top off with the third gens it causes lots of problems and CEL's, not sure if the 2g has the same behavior.

Does the place you bought it from offer any type of warranty with the purchase? I'd make them troubleshoot it if possible.

 

Codes are PO420 PO441 PO455

 

Remove the vacuum line going from the canister to the purge valve, and also unplug the connector. Turn the engine on and check for vacuum at the hose nipple. There should be none at all. If vacuum is present the purge valve is leaking and needs to be replaced. If leaking it's basically a intake leak that sucks vapor into the engine. It could be throwing off oxygen sensor readings and setting the P0420. The p0441 is trying to say the purge valve isn't working correctly and the 455 is large leak I believe

 

It’s on the driver side of the engine bay.

 

gonna try this over the weekend. I did pop the hood this evening and the air filter was exposed on the back side. Whoever changes it last didn’t put it back correctly.
