Searched but did not find an answer on tacomaworld. Have a stock 2003 Tacoma with a cab level fiberglass shell. Would like to put a 20L Wavian jerry can on my homemade rack made of 1" square tubing and 3/4" pipe on top of the shell, but do not want it upright. Height and mounting issues. I asked Wavian about it and they appeared to think it is ok to do. What is your thought on mounting the can flat on it's side? Planning a Utah trip in a few weeks, camping away from highways/town for a long stretch of time. I would empty the can into the truck just as soon as I can. Very little highway/pavement travel. Am I looking for leaking issues? Would be pretty warm, would I need to vent the can if carried for a day or three?

Reply from swisslink.com: Thanks for reaching out. That would work will mounting it on its side or back. the Jerry cans and holders are made to be mounted either way.

If it’s a quality jerry can with a good seal and solid threads it will be good. We used to mount those things in hummers vertical, horizontal with mouth up, mouth down, you name it. Steer clear of the overpriced ones at HF if it’s going to see trail/rough roads. Ask me how I know…

Thank you for the reply. I can guess how you know about the HF cans and do not wish to replicate such a thing (again). Similar experience with a cheap plastic jerry can a few years back. Truck sat in 90 degree sun for a day with the can mounted upright. We returned from our 8 hour walk and found the rear of the truck covered with fuel. Not a nice find but at least it was not in flames.

Yes, we are planning to see somewhat rough trails in the truck! Probably not with a filled jerry can..

If I purchase a jerry can it will be from Wavian. I may opt for a cheaper mount, or just strap the can on with a piece of plywood/carpet between can and rack. I will never purchase a questionable quality fuel can again.
