My truck spent its life in Mexico mainly, and it's going back there. Other than both radiator hoses, p.s. belt, alt belt, what do you recommend doing to it? 140,000 miles. Need to build a maint. parts list. Thx.

Timing belt/water pump, tensioners and all associated parts. Valve cover gaskets and whatnot. Perhaps lower ball joints.

    Definitely lower ball joints.

How extensive of a maintenance list are you looking for??

I'm 5(+?) yrs in to rebuilding my truck. "Replacing everything that wears-out, is rubber, and is electrical gets replaced" is what I told myself when I started this project .... back when it was a 98 4Runner lol

Fuel filter, spark plugs, spark wires, intake filter, clean MAF, drain and fill diffs and transmission, flush steering fluid, flush radiator, bleed brakes, check front and rear pads and rotors/drum, replace front and rear shocks.

And surprisingly no one mentioned this yet...but oil and filter change.

Good stuff, thanks all. Some of these I never would have thought of. My 99 Tacoma 4x4 definitely started feeling a little tired this year. Should I just assume a 1999 with 140,000 miles needs new lower ball joints and new shocks, and pcv valve? I have been good about fluids in the diffs, oil changes, radiator.

Vacuum leaks......unfortunately the black hoses hide this....
    get very brittle over time.....

Old power steering fluid/hoses can be very destructive...

One of the best things you can do is change the coolant every few years....
    7yrs dont cut it.....

My radiator is pretty new, and the coolant is a year old.
Second, what ball joint brand do you recommend?
Third, what shocks do you recommend?

Mine is TRD 3.4L V6 engine.

Is the pcv valve a no brainer part? I'm getting 10 different valves when I pull it up.

On the shocks, I only go off road once or twice a year, but Mexico's roads are pretty rough. So what shocks
would last a good number of years, and be on fairly constant semi-rough roads but low speeds? Mexico is filled with topes
also known as speed bumps, and some of em are almost invisible til it's too late.

OEM ball joints and PCV. Is your truck suspension stock? If so then look into bilstein 4600.

    Part numbers
    PCV 12204-62010
    PCV grommet 90480-18001
    LBJ 43340-39436 & 43330-39556
LBJ bolts 8 x 90019-10933 torqued to 37fl lb(use this if your LBJ has dust protectors) if not, then find the other part number...don't have that on hand since mine have the protectors.

Thanks for replies. Another question. Gear Oil for differentials. Can the 75w90 be used for front and rear differentials? I see in the manual it says 75w90 for transfer case, for manual transmission, but does not specify for diffs except to say GL-5. Can I use 75w90 everywhere? (Having hard time finding synthetic 80w90.) Thanks.

Some people use 75w90 across the board. I stick to the book and used 80w90. Walmart Supertech has it in 80w90.

    Getting truck back tomorrow morning.
Here is the list of what was done, and a comment or two.
    - OEM belts (3) and radiator hoses (2). Peak Asian coolant concentrate, added distilled water.
    - Lower ball joints. 24 yr old ball joints removed were not too bad, believe it or not.
    - Bilstein 4600 all around. Mechanic took springs to a presser off site. I don't fully understand
this, but he said the 4600 is too long for the front. Truck now rides stiffer, stronger, and higher.
    - PCV valve. Mechanic agreed it was a good idea to replace it. Prevent engine from smoking.
    - Wipers. Used NAPA -19 for driver side, and std -17 for passenger side.
    - Clutch pedal pad replaced. It was worn down to metal in places.
    - All gear oil fluids. Differentials, transfer case, manual transmission.
    - Front headlamp assembly. Bot CAPA certified TYC. Dresses up the front end look again,
along with some shine the mechanic put on the plastic around the bumper areas.

I had bought a spare tire replacement holder (the crank-up type under the rear of the vehicle),
but the mechanic said in order to replace it, a piece of strong metal has to be removed from the frame,
and it will take some doing. I told him to skip it, and I'll keep the spare riding on top of the A.R.E. topper.
I don't understand Toyota, as they sell these Tacomas in very insecure areas of the world (ISIS and Taliban's
vehicle of choice) and yet every thief goes right for that full spare wheel and tire as an easy 5 minute theft
because of that poor holder of the spare. Even a chain and padlock can't stop 'em, as they just cut the cable.

I am going to look for a brake recommendation discussion for GEN 1 Tacoma.

I feel pretty good about what got done. Mileage is 142,300. Truck will be good for Mexico now, or
Central America, or the SW U.S.A. back country.

I saved some money buying my own parts, and labor was very reasonable. Mechanic is a 74 year old man
who has his own shop in the country about 10 miles outside town. Suits me better than the big shops, and
he's seen just about everything in his long life of working on vehicles. He says the older vehicles last longer
    than the new ones. Adios.
