Not necessary! I know my tailgate is down if I hear a constant thumping, metal and plastic rattling, and as I look in the rear view mirror, wondering if I closed my tailgate, I see my tools scattering down the road. See?! Easy Peasy! I don't need a mod like this!

Jk OP, this is a really cool simple mod, that would have saved me the few hundred times I've been going down the road wondering if I closed my tailgate, only to have to pull over, and put in reverse to check.
Tac2021Thank you for posting this! I will definitely be adding this to my Tacoma!

I know many of you are probably laughing at this, but go to any ice fishing forum or facebook group and look at all the posts from people who lost all their gear out of the back of their truck because they forgot to put the tailgate up.... All season, there are at least 2-3 posts a day from people asking if anyone found their stuff on the highway because they forgot to put up the gate.

I had one of these on my Ranger. As for all the geniuses that don't approve of your little tailgate signal? Eff them!

But what if a hobo meanders by and opens your tailgate at a traffic llight while you are already in gear? This is genius.

One design improvement to consider is mounting it to the tailgate with some heavy duty outdoor rated velcro (versus that nasty double sided Gorilla tape). The velcro mounting would allow for easy removal when needed.

If you train yourself to only approach your taco from the rear.....

With all the so called tailgate thieves, one would lock it. there for it would always be in the closed(up) position.

However...if you have a bed mat you won't immediately lose your cargo.
I once left the tailgate open (DUH), went on highway at 65mph and didn't lose my toolbox.

Thank you all for the positive feed back. If anyone is curious as to why I did this, two weeks prior I went to pick up my daughter and granddaughter for some shooting time at my local gun range. I had opened the tailgate to reposition all my gear but forgot to close said tail gate. long story short, the gun slide out at an intersection. When got to the range I saw an empty truck bed. I immediately reported it to my local PD. I provided the serial # and they contacted the NICS data base and reported it lost/stolen. Two days later I got a call from the on duty officer and said someone had turned in my gun & range bag. The gun was in a case undamaged. She gave me cautious but polite warning. I thanked her, end of story. Oh they updated the NICs data base, re-entered my AR-15 as recovered, in possession of owner.

Attach the second reflector to the back side for added nighttime visibility - make it a two’fer.

If I forget to close my tailgate I have an audible tune that plays similar to @Buck Henry dish washer and when I hear the tune I just jump out and close the tailgate.

Here’s my $0.02. Not sure if the oreilly delivery trucks still have this sticker or not but it said “GOAL- Get Out And Look”. Good idea for the tailgate.

How many times has your tailgate fallen down without you putting it down?
