Essential Mods Prior to First Offroad

Missed one ... more of a "good for anytime" device ... a jump-starter battery boost. I have

Noco GB40. No fun when your kid runs the headlights all night and you have no battery next morning.

 

Imagine you get to a camp spot and realize you forgot the most important thing, beer…

absolutely, I think they just bolt off but it’s worth the 1/2 hr time to take them off rather than letting nature do it for you with less control

once again less mods and more recovery gear is always a good start… also gives good reason to do mods when you scratch the front or back so it goes from a “want” spend to a “need” if you’re like me and gotta budget within the wife’s approval

Where are you camping at? How rough is it to get there? How far from civilization you going/How long you gonna be out.

You can find camp spots that match your build levels as you progress through all the different set ups coming your way. Depending on budget, I would focus on the camping side first food, water, shelter, safety, recovery. Also, one I struggle with is find some people to go with a couple of times at first. Sometimes watching someone else do an obstacle in your same vehicle will help you realize it's capabilities. And motivate you to stop being a little bitch and try it.

Once you have that down let the mods begin. Try to have fun, it's an amazing black hole of cool shit you're about to jump into. F looking cool, do what works for you.

Fill up your gas tank, go with someone experienced.

 

In my opinion, the listed mods are way too heavy. I’d go:

• Greenlane aluminum sliders
• 255/75r17 tires on lightweight SCS or Koenig or Rays wheels.
• Locker

And that’s it. Maybe 4.88 gears and 255/80r17s if you want 33”s. Everything else isn’t worth the weight. No need for lift.

For overlanding, focus on the kit. You’ll need a med kit, tool kit, and emergency survival kit if you actually legitimately go to remote places.

There is a point of no return on some roads/ trails.
Once you start downhill in a 2wd. There is no @CaptainReverso

 

A stock OR or Pro will take you almost everywhere. I took my stock OR through the Rubicon trail with no damage other than needing an alignment afterwards. Good spotting, good tires and a slow pace. Having at least a rear locker I would consider a critical mod if you don't have it stock. It's saved me in the sand and also in rocky trails.

I have since built my truck fully and I don't regret it, but really you can do so much with a stock truck I recommend doing as much as you can with less. Experiencing it with a stock truck will make you appreciate your truck even more when you do mod it. The advice to focus on camping gear first is solid - my camping gear makes the largest difference when we go out. The truck being built makes it a lil nicer and I can rip it a lil harder, which is fun. But none of the mods are required for 95% of the offroading I do.

 

Just. Fucken. Send. It.

 

Start small and gradually push the envelope. Notice when your anxiety level is increasing from what you're doing or where you are. If it doesn't, then either you poor judgement or aren't pushing hard enough. Figure out what's causing the anxiety and determine if there's something tangible that could alleviate it, or if you're just being stupid.

Biggest thing is not to get yourself into anything you can't get yourself out of. If within cell service, that might just be about opening your wallet and bleeding money out of every orifice to get towed back to civilization. If you can't communicate, it's solely your problem to solve. Be prepared with just enough gear, knowledge, and experience that your chances of success are high.

Listen to that little inner voice (hopefully you have one) saying "this is not going to go well..." and turn around before that happens!

 

Best advice. Know when to turn around before it's impossible to turn around. I've bailed out of a few trails that were underrated. 6/10s that were more like 8-9/10s. Erosion does serious trail damage sometimes.

Yeah, why I’m pretty focused on armor and recovery gear. Would prefer to get myself out of something on my own before calling in the cavalry. Planning on taking it slow, have next to no experience
