I am well overdue to fix this issue. I’ve had an issue when coming to an abrupt stop with my truck, where it will then jerk hard forward. It’s definitely gotten worse where it now has the same issue when taking to fast of a turn. I’m almost certain it is my slip yoke. The only slip yoke I see on my drive shaft goes into my transmission. And I am noticing a small bead of leaking transmission oil. My question is if I take the drive shaft out, and change the seal so there is no leak, do I also grease the yoke? Or does it rely on the trans fluid to keep it lubricated. And should I add more transmission fluid?

Doubt much escaped through there. R&R the seal and call it good.

So is that likely not what’s causing the hard jerking feeling when coming to a stop?

I would check the oil level but usually a seal leak like that isn’t enough to cause a low level unless you waited a really long time.

How can I check the oil, is there a dipstick for it like regular oil? Or do I need to drain it from the bottom and add more

This post has a link to an article you should read.

Some members think it's due to the AC compressor running, some think it's due to axle wrap. I've experienced a lurch that is covered in the above link. I haven't fixed it be cause it only happens about 10,000-20,000 miles so I am waiting for it to get a lot worse before I have somebody tear apart the transmission.

@Bizzle - did you ever find the fix for this problem? I'm having the same issue in my 1st gen. Just ordered the grease/grease guns to grease the zerks.

hard stop as a stoplight about to turn to red
couple seconds after complete stop feels like i was hit from behind
has happened about half dozen times
definitely not the A/C compressor or transmission shifting into 1st

Have your transmission fluid levels serviced after you change out the seal.

I see you're on a 6" lift. Are you using rear spacer blocks to help achieve the height? I'm sure you are familiar with the axle wrap that these trucks can develop.

That DS is too far out. The seal dust cover should be even with the tailshaft housing cover. I bet if you grab that ds and wiggle it you'll get alot of vertical play. No bueno.

I had the exact same issue with my 2006, it started with a small leak, I waited to get it checked or fixed and suddenly started to make that kick on hard stops the dealer wanted to check/replace the transmission but reading the forum here someone suggested to check/fix the AT fluid and it was low, I probably needed to add like 500 ml (just stick to the Toyota WS AT fluid) also replaced the yoke seal and after that it worked fine again and also no leaks. Good luck.
