Why when people talk up tunes they sound like every other cringey salesman? It’s a huge red flag for me.

Had my mailman telling me how great his tune came out... Then he slipped and mentioned that he'd get $50 off if he got another person to do it. So i would pay $400 and he would get the discount...."F" that.... Not the brightest salesman....

I'm not tuned (5th gen 4Runner). But, everyone I know who has gotten tuned seems very happy with it.:notsure:

Paying 400 bucks for a software flash does seem a bit, uh. Way way way overpriced.

People pay like $300 for throttle pedal manipulation devices that don't add any power and are happy. $400 for a real increase in usable power seems like a steal to me.

Except they're buying a device. Even when purchasing software programs at least you own them. Tunes you're paying for a flash of software that you can't easily remove yourself if you decide its not for you. It's not apples and oranges.

This isn't a bash on the actual outcome, I'm well aware lots of people are quite happy with the end results.

I think some need a tune buying a truck for all the wrong reasons.

I guess one would need to do their research before deciding on a tune. That doesn't change the fact that it's really a good value for those who enjoy it. Nobody is forcing people to buy a tune.

I have a few tacomas, 4Runners, supercharged, stock etc. All tuned. More than happy to let you drive them. Just because someone loves their tune, shares their experience or promotes an item doesn't mean it's bad. How else is someone supposed to know about it. Every person I have tuned says "why didn't the truck come like this" or "I wish I would have gotten this done sooner".

Just like anything else in life, no one is forcing you to buy anything.

Correct the pedal commander is a middle man that manipulates pedal input and occasionally throws you in limp mode. OTT tune gives actual performance gains. Complete engine and Trans rewrite. Based off research and dyno time. The alternative is to rent a dyno, get a stand alone system, get a tuner and spend $1000+ for the same result. Keep in mind not all tunes are the same, some have been known to produce less power than stock (fools gold shady companies).

I have spent thousands just on hardware for Tuning for other applications.

Example - Spend $450 to get your tacoma tuned and get 24 torque along with many other benefits. Or Spend $7000 Magnuson Supercharger + install + plugs fluids ... all in $9000ish for 55 torque.

Who could've guessed that someone selling this would promote it? Definitely not coming across like a cringey salesman like the OP stated lol. A software flash shouldn't cost 450 dollars. This is the selling burned cds/ringtones of the tacoma world. It'll change eventually.

    Wow, what a clueless post.

You're not paying for the reflash. You are paying for the research that went into the tune, and the equipment used for that research.

Try comparing other modifications, and see how much horsepower you gain per dollar.

I’ve always thought that ECU tuning tends to benefit cars and trucks that are turbocharged or supercharged, naturally aspirated vehicles don’t benefit as much—or at all. These are the first forums where people are freaking out about doing an ECU flash on a naturally aspirated engine making tremendous gains in performance.

A counter argument could be that you’re paying $450.00 dollars for something that should’ve been engineered properly out of the factory. The fact that 3rd Gen Tacoma owners are having to constantly tune their trucks for transmission problems or for a more optimal power band is disconcerting to me to say the least. I feel like Toyota shit the bed with this, there is no reason why a 2022 Tacoma should be having transmission issues, or other dubious drivability concerns at this point, the bugs should have been worked out by 2017.
That being said, would I pay it, absolutely, but it’s still BS, imo.

Most people say their transmission shifts better and the throttle response is faster. In my case 6mt, the throttle and power overall is better. Whoever tunes your truck can put it back to stock if you dont like it.

I don't get why you're still not getting my take. Tunes are fine, some are good. They should not cost what they do and the salespeople are often like the above and thats beyond cringey. Simple as. I'll still probably do it, but I won't be appreciative of the guy who's over charging me for 5 minutes of work (most of that being scheduling).
