How far can you actually go off road with the Toyo AT3s?

I've been looking at the Toyo Open Country AT3s; however, I'm concerned they might not be quite aggressive enough for some of the trails I do. Even though I only go out about once a month, I've seen how easily ATs can turn into a racing slick on the kind of muddy tracks that are abundant around here. Would the Toyos be good enough for trails like in the video attached, or would I be better off going for an MT like the Falken Wildpeaks?

If you want the best traction in the mud, wet, etc, and you like Toyo then go with the awesome Open Country M/T
Wheel speed cleans out the tread when in mud. I have both Open Country ATII and ATIII and the ATII are worse in mud than the ATIII.

I haven’t seen the Toyo MTs in the 255/75/17 size. I was seriously considering the Yokohama Geolander MT, but the guy at discount tire warned me they were ridiculously loud even my MT standards. He pointed me towards the Falken Wildpeak MTs as a more livable alternative.

Obviously, if you’re going in a lot of mud get MT. Seems like you already know what you SHOULD get

It's listed as the first tire in the 17" pull-down menu and C-rated FTW!

Well I’m not seeking out deep mud that often or anything, but I do run trails around once a month, and it’s pretty hard to avoid mud up in the Ozarks. On the one hand it seems silly to get MTs for a 95% on road truck, but then it only takes one time to get stuck.

I’ll look into them but I’m only seeing 255/80/16 on discount tire. I have also heard they can be quite loud.

Then get the AT, get some tools to get unstuck if you do get stuck, and just be cautious. That's what I would do given the limited amount of use for the MT besides once a month or so

That's what I'm leaning towards, although the AT3s are just as expensive and just about as as heavy as the MTs, so I winder if there'd be that much of an mpg/ride/treadwear/noise penalty in stepping up to the MT. With a more aggressive AT, it seems like there's a fine line between getting the best ad worst of both worlds, if that makes sense at all.

My truck also has open diffs and I go out solo a lot, so the extra traction from the muddies would be nice, for piece of mind if nothing else. I don't drive this thing every day either FWIW.

The Yoko g003’s are extremely quiet for a mud tire. Idk what that guy at the shop was thinking telling you that but it’s just flat out wrong. It’s a pretty well agreed upon fact that the g003’s are the quietest on-road mud terrain out there.

I switched from General Grabber ATX all terrains to the Yoko g003’s and they were only a tiny bit louder than the Generals. My wife didn’t know I had even changed the tires yet because she didn’t notice a difference in road noise at all. The g003’s are a fantastic tire. Probably the best road manners of any MT out there.

Have you checked out the Mickey Thompson Baja boss ATs? It’s a hybrid tire so in between a mud and all terrain. That might be a really good option for you, they are 3 peak snow flake rated in sizes under 12.5 wide as well.

I was surprised by that too, since I'd also heard the road noise was reasonable. However, the guy I talked to was adamant that many customers had been returning them because of excessive road noise. It'd be more noticeable to me in my first gen too since there's no sound deadening.

In any case, the Wildpeak MTs seems like another good option for an MT with acceptable road manners and treadwear. They are 5 lbs heavier than the Yokies though.

That’s odd! There are a lot of hybrid tires out there too that might fit the bill for you, if you’re concerned about road noise.

Unfortunately I don’t have any personal experience with the Wildpeak MTs.

The Nitto ridge grapplers are at the top of the list for my next tire.

Have you checked out the Toyo R/T Trail? I just got them on my truck and they have been great so far! We have the AT3's on my wife's 4Runner and absolutely love those tires as well. But the R/T Trails on my truck are definitely more aggressive.

I haven’t found those in 255/75/17. I wanted the skinnier tires to avoid rubbing with the FJC wheels. They have horrible backspacing and I’m wanting to avoid spacers if I can.

I have been looking at these also but I keep seeing a lot of bad reviews that have steered me away.

I have been pretty happy with them so far. I think the ride and noise are definitely closer to an M/T vs an A/T. For a daily driver, the AT3 is a MUCH better option. I've had ko2s, ridge graps, trail graps, at3's, and now RT Trails. (love all those tires) But I absolutely love the way these look so I am okay with putting up with the extra road noise. In regards to mileage, I have a 14 mile commute to work (consistent both ways with hills, grade, etc.) I normally average 17.5 to 19.0. On the lucky days that I don't catch any lights or traffic I'll get 20.

That mileage isn’t bad at all! And you’re right, those things look absolutely killer.
