I installed a Midland GMRS radio a few months ago. Since then, I’ve had it turn on by itself when I started my truck maybe 2 or 3 times. Any guesses as to why this happens or how to correct it? Positive is wired to a Blue Sea fuse block and negative is connected at the batteries ground point on the fender.

i’m thinking it turns on once it senses any power whatsoever.

Power surge maybe? I also have a Northstar AGM battery. I know the have a little higher voltage than standard batteries. Maybe that has something to do with it? It’s not a huge deal as long as it’s not going to damage something.

    Yeah.
Which radio? Mine has a knob you have to turn for it to come on, so that would freak me out. I'm guessing yours has the controls in the handset. Could be a sticky button or something, bad connector between the handset and base, or just a faulty unit.

Mine has all controls on the handset. Midland MXT575. Power button is on the top. I did check the connections and all seem fine(clicks into place solidly)

With the power button. I don’t think you get what I’m saying. With the radio powered off, it sometimes will turn on when I start my truck.

No I understand. I suspect that power button just sends a low voltage signal to a microcontroller to signal that it is time boot up the radio. That same process might be kicked off by some noise from the electrical system and causing your issue. It’s probably not harmful, but you might just be sure your grounds are good and maybe throw a ferrite on the power wires if you’re feeling saucy.

A kenwood of mine did that in the Jeep. I think it was a power spike and filtering issue. I'd put a magnet filter on the power cord at one point and it started, kept going when I took the filter off. Didn't do a loop however.
