    Hi,
Haven’t been on Tacoma world in many years but I’m back.
Waiting on my 5th Tacoma which is a 23 Trail edition. It’s supposed to come in mid may.
Its coming with a factory tonneau cover but I’m just wondering is it hard or soft and is it any good?

    Thanks!

I think I’m going to get the BAKFlip MX4.
I’ve had and mostly like the hard cover that raises up on a few trucks, but you lose your truck bed and get a glorified trunk.
I was looking at getting a retractable cover, but you lose about a foot of truck bed where the cover retracts.
I’m going to go with the Bakflip because I can still use my Taco as a truck (or have a glorified trunk when I want it). The only thing that concerns me about the bakflip is not 100% weather proof.

If the cover is anything like their past gen3 tacoma tonneau covers, it'll be a hard tri-fold vinyl type thats rather heavy. I haven't checked who actually manufactures them.

Congrats on the new incoming truck, I have heard nothing really negative about the factory tonneau cover.

Except for the weight, it's a great cover, very waterproof, seals well. Like any cover with a top as such, it needs a protectant coating like 303, or wolfsteins now, and then to prevent the suns ultra violet rays from any damage to the surface.

Factory should be hard trifold. Design is unique to Toyota. It's ok. Weatherstripping and trim pieces may start breaking after the 3-year basic warranty expires.

    There's also a dealer-installed soft tonneau that's a "Toyota genuine accessory"

I have had Extang solid fold hard covers on two previous trucks. I believe they are: great looking, very secure (most important to me), and strong. I have used the cover as a work platform which easily supported my full weight and in some cases a ladder. I did have some water leakage. I recently purchased the solid fold for my 2021 long bed Tacoma. Extang has made some significant improvements in the new model (solid fold ALX), including a much easier hand operated latching system and redesigned rubber/vinyl seals. The leakage test I have performed revealed very little leakage which were a few drops running down the inside bed walls. I also like that the cover sits on the bed rails. No interior space is intruded upon. This is important in that the Tacoma has a relatively shallow bed depth compared to my previous full size trucks.
