on that note, what pillow do you use
at home I like $20 memory foam from Costco; that also takes up space
there's camping versions of everything apparently. Camping pillows. That inflate with air to be portable
I'm guessing not as comfortable
and probably more expensive



do you just slap the sleeping bag straight down on the platform?
Or get a little foam topper?
I've got a 5' bed (most humans are not 5') so that is tricky...
It's definitely 6'+ diagonally

maybe a weird cut on the ends of a foam topper to fit diagonal...

I was wondering what to do about this.
Google said use 3/4", $60/ea 4x8 ouch.
then *after* I buy it, I see a post where someone used 5/8 that could be $30...
read on an RV forum that anything under 3/4" can't be walked on and will sag

so i guess there's piece of mind in 3/4, though it's more weight...

problem is, not treated. Shell shop tells me no shell is ever truly waterproof.
Treated wood? $9 less, MUCH heavier. And splinter = recipe for infection

maybe carpet would protect it. Or having put plastic sheet underneath.

There's sprays out there to prevent mold, but you can only spray what you see which is the bare wood underside. No real way to get it in under the carpet where you can't see. The carpet isn't a perfect seal. At least not with the amount of staples I put.

 

A full size pillow is a must for me. Those camping pillows suck and I only use them when I go backpacking.

I put down a rei camping mattress on top of my platform to sleep on. I used 1” plywood and All of my wood is coated with bed liner. The previous version I had I used 3/4” plywood that I covered with carpet. The way it was supported it bowed over time and got moldy.

I wouldn’t use less that 3/4” if I were you but it’s really about the support design that dictates that. And I’d paint it with mold resistant paint.

I wonder how long my platform has until mold. At least a year hopefully. Can always take it back out the truck, remove the carpet, apply treatment.
Thought about stapling a lot down the bottom the edges of the carpet, do the bottom, seal the seams with flexseal
but that wouldn't be good because condensation can still get in, or if the carpet gets wet the water will penetrate through and to the wood
Right now supports are 2x6 across the notches (qty2) just because it's easy and removes, but I guess another method could be a vertical piece running the length via the center, using a 2x10 or something with a T at the top

 

I ran the 2 by 6s in my 2nd gen for quite some time until one broke, then I just replaced the 2x6 and added the a center support like you’re suggesting and it was much more supported.

oh man i loved my Napier tent, was awesome in my F350. sadly, it's been sitting on my shop shelf since I sold that truck but not a lot of 8ft boxes.

 

So I was using my full size home pillows but, shells aren't totally water or dust proof.
So on my last trip I used two klymit pillows and a miniature my pillow. They worked great and were pretty comfy. They don't get dusty" except the my pillow ". pack up small and don't get forgotten when packing now.

I've tried the inflatable option, they suck. I have a different small pillow, but too small and so little stuffing it may as well not be there. Ththermarest is great and it rolls up to pack down and protect it from dust in transit.

 

I have that same thermarest pillow. It's nice, but imo it doesn't have enough fill so it just feels like my head is basically on the ground when I try to sleep on my side.

Finished the second half of the bed setup so I can now run it as a full platform. Had a ton of fun building it all. I really only worked on it during my twins nap time or after they went to bed so it took forrrrrever to finish. Last step is a four foot drawer for the enclosed side. Hoping they don’t drop that 1-3pm nap anytime soon!!!

 

Bam Beds are just the best. So versatile. I just carpeted mine!

 

How did you attach the carpet? Just glue? I’ve been thinking of carpeting mine……

Scissors to trim! I would let it set for a day though, it took mine a bit to really stick well to the wood.

 

I'm also loving my bambeds. It's so nice to simply toss the rear board up onto the middle board Incase I need to haul some taller stuff right at the rear. Also taking two boards out makes for a great shelf up against the cab. Versatility hard to beat. benefit is no crossbeam support getting in the way.

Made all the difference when I chose it initially. I have a commercial topper on it now with a little bit more and it is epic.

 

I have a high top camper and have considered swapping to a commercial topper for some time. Just haven’t come across one. Hear what I have now.


But having those large access doors on both sides seems like it would be so nice.
