Always important; cut stuff on the CNC today for a buddy and I was like here...you'll need these

 

I gotta where earplugs plus ear muffs when I use mine.

 

I have the certiflat table (same I have on hold for you) and when I’m using it as a fixture, I’ll occasionally get too close to the table and give it a little zap. Doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens.

 

You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to using that thing.

Just got my finger brake today.

 

I might be heading to Pinnacles NP later this month. We could meet up somewhere close to you if it pans out.

Sandwich mounts for my compressor and air tank. Installing air cups on my daily to get 2" of lift when entering driveways while still retaining my coilovers.

 

How well does that mask hold up to grinding sparks? Or is it more of a “use it in till you can’t see shit and get another one” deal?

 

I'll let you know. First time trying it. They do sell the replacement lenses though

There are so many people on all these forms telling people how to do the wrong thing. If you need to just weld basic stuff just get a MIG. Make sure whatever your welding has been cleaned and fresh metal is present. If you're well looks like bubbles on top of the metal then you did not penetrate. You want it to look like a roll of dimes. Thinner the metal lower the speed lower the heat. Thicker the metal turn that heat up. Mess with the heat and speeds, practice makes perfect, good luck. Don't listen to people that try to sound smarter than they are.

my welding is ugly... but it holds. looking to improve & gain some tips.

note: im a jittery, hyper person who doesnt have steady hands. LMAO

Wife and I were talking about heading down there and maybe over in to the back of Big Sur, too, but it looks like tons of roads and camps are still closed (through June!) What a winter we've had. oof!

 

Tons of BLM out there.

Actual camp spots have to be reserved months in advance; I used to live out there for over 11 years.

 

forewarning, i'm just an idiot in my garage banging on stuff until it sticks together with a flux core:

it really depends on what you're doing. my understanding is that mig is going to be more 'do-anything'(weld a frame, then maybe some body panels), where tig is more for precision/thin-wall stuff, or for metals other than steel or aluminum, where you can change the filler rod used. you can weld most things with mig other than thin materials, but it's less common to tig high-thickness materials.

if cost is not a major factor, and you have 220v in your work area, i would highly recommend mig welder, with spool gun attachment. it would get you out of most situations you can put yourself into. worst case, you find out how expensive new argon tanks are, and you can just run a flux core welding wire like i do. flux core really only means extra spatter that needs to be cleaned up. it can be partly mitigated by using anti-spatter, but there's still more cleanup than when using shielding gas.

 

I'm far from being an expert, but I'd vote for MIG or maybe a combo machine with STICK. If it's windy where you live, use flux-core. If you can set up a canopy with some side walls to block most of the wind, then gas should work fine. STICK works almost anywhere on anything, but it's messy.

I have been a proponent of MIG from the start. My MIG welder has made me a lot of folding money over the years.

Don't get me wrong, there is a bit of beauty seeing a colorful, perfect TIG weld, but I prefer to look at naked ladies when I want porn, not welds. Everyone has their tastes.
