I have a 1990 toyota 4 runner. best care ever with 511,000 miles well maintained. The clutch died with 30,000 miles and toyota would not cover because "car is too old"
In the last two years, toyota has sent knox sensor switches - 2 defective but new, 2 cold dead start switch - one was defective, 2 radiator hoses - one was defective, a wrong part
and now the whole clutch replacement including flywheel
I have my car serviced at an independent shop with excellent service and people that know what they are doing. I have stated that I do not want anymore toyota parts unless that is the only place on earth to get one.

I feel your pain, I have a 1991 FJ80. Toyota does not offer any real warranty on those parts—if they even still make them.

Are you / the shop ordering direct from a dealer? Even OEM will have bunk parts once in a great while, but that seems like an awful lot of failures for genuine new Toyota parts

I only ask because fake parts are a very common scam these days. You can order a "genuine" Toyota part, it'll come in what looks to be real packaging, but it's really just a cheap aftermarket copy. Ebay is particularly bad for that. Not to say that's the case here, but unless the parts are coming from a really reputable place, I'd be suspicious that you could be getting fake aftermarket crap wrapped up in a Toyota box / bag.

If they are legitimate, then that's some extraordinarily bad luck and I definitely understand the frustration

How did the “whole clutch” go out?
Did the pressure plate fail? How did the flywheel fail too?
Was it a new flywheel? Or a resurfaced flywheel?

I deliver parts for a Toyota dealership. Most of the shops I deliver to will only order genuine Toyota parts to install in their customer's cars if they can't get an aftermarket part. Why? Because aftermarket parts cost them less, so they make more money.

Why do I bring this up? Because most shops tell their customers that they install "Toyota parts" when they actually don't. When they say "Toyota parts", they're actually saying "parts that fit a Toyota." There's a big difference there. And generally speaking, aftermarket parts just don't work as well or last as long as OEM Toyota parts.

So OP, what kind of parts was / is your shop putting in? I highly doubt true OEM Toyota parts would fail at the rate you're seeing in your vehicle.

BTW, sending the wrong part (radiator hose) does not mean it's defective.

Still waiting for a reply from the OP. Silence - to me at least - means she found out her shop was installing "parts that fit a Toyota" instead of "genuine OEM Toyota parts." Having driven Toyotas since 1976 and working for a dealership in Parts & Service, I can assure you all that genuine OEM Toyota parts bought from a Toyota dealer (not eBay) virtually never fail the way the OP stated.

Even if they are using “genuine Toyota parts”, at this point the vehicle is so old the “Toyota” parts available for it are likely not the actual oem stuff anymore. As vehicles become ancient the OEM quits making stuff but the parts departments continue sales by reboxing other stuff. Mopar was notorious for that, the water pumps originally were way better on my Jeep long ago, these days what you get in the box is the same crap as you get from the parts store. Same for starters and alternators, and sensors. Just because it comes in a Mopar box doesn’t make it original. Likely the same as Toyota with that much age.
