That would be fun! Jimny Fighter! Too bad we don’t get those either. There is a lot down the road from us that has about a half dozen lifted Samurai’s.

The late model Jimny is the perfect vehicle for me. Super annoying they aren't available in Canada.

Its very annoying in general that no one is attempting to make even a slightly fuel efficient vehicle with a real transfer case. Anything that isn't a 4runner, Bronco, Wrangler, or Truck comes with a much less capable AWD system that barely puts 50% of power to the rear wheels and offers zero mechanical advantage.

I think there is one oddball out there in the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and thats it.

The FT-FX concept was supposed to have a real 4WD system, never made it to production. Do see some of the ideas pulled from it going into current production vehicles. Like that removable speaker

I think the Ford Exploder Timberline comes with a Torsen rear but I'm not sure about a low range. Also it seems to basically get F150 MPGs so you're right back to where I started. Want to offroad? You should still buy a truck.

It's dumb. The Wrangler has a few reasonably efficient powertrain options but the pricing is simply ridiculous.

UTVs have gotten so good, probably no point for auto manufacturers making a small fuel efficient off-road oriented vehicle. No idea what UTVs get mileage wise though. Cam make them street legal here, just can’t take them on the interstate. Not I would to take something like the Jimny on the interstate either, don’t even like driving my Tacoma on it with all the nut jobs in a furious hurry.

Probably why we get quasi off-road CUVs with crappy CVT trannies. The focus is on mpgs rather than off-roadiness. With everything going EV in the near future not much need for transfer cases anymore. Theoretically an EV should be able to wheel better than a traditional 4WD system.

I mean, with instant peak torque you would think so but I haven't really seen anything capable of producing the power or a rear locked low range offroad vehicle.

Rivian looks promising off-road even if it isn’t really tailored for it. Have been following some EV dirt bike stuff, they almost have too much torque and want to spin the tires in the slow technical stuff. Believe software would fix it. I for one would love an EV dirt bike, trail riding in near silence is very appealing. The noise with the current bikes is what other trail users gripe the most about.

I follow EV bike stuff too. Its getting very appealing. I agree. I also am certain that traction control software will clean up slow technical stuff.

Oh yeah, software traction control cleanup would fix it. You would think with all of the hard enduro racers they have, it would be addressed. That or simply put a clutch in them. Believe some E trials bikes have clutch, can’t remember who off the top of my head. Yamaha maybe?

Trying to find the video of the KTM E-Freeride, it’s that guy in Australia with the nasally voice. If you know who I am talking about.

Have ridden that bike, not quite there yet, but there is a lot of potential. Love my 300 2Ts, but soon as they get the range figured out I am there. The Alta looked very promising, unfortunate they went under. Varge is supposedly shipping. Just need one of the big manufacturers to fully get on board.

Hard to be efficient with that type of drivetrain. For right now folks buy those because they are efficient, but I think others are now seeing the benefits beyond just saving gas.

IMO PHEV is where to go. Most drive short distances so doing that on EV, even if the long distance economy is low, is overall a cost saving. Beyond that the added power of a PHEV capable electric motor will benefit the vehicle in all driving. I really considered the Jeep wrangler PHEV but when I can buy a BMW SUV for the SAME PRICE (which is also PHEV) it looks silly. A Gladiator PHEV would be on my list if they chop about $10k off the price.

PHEV Tacoma would be perfect. E mode for the work commute, hybrid mode for the weekend warrior stuff. Both the BMW SUV and Gladiator are useless to me, maybe if the Gladiator was an extra cab 6’ bed I would consider it.

Honestly would just me happy with a plain ol’ petroleum engine that got 30 mpg in the Tacoma, new turbo 4 might be high 20s.

I don't think you will see the 4th Gen MPG that high, think it was the Highlander that went from V6 to turbo 4 and had zero change in gas mileage.

Under my foot, guessing 25-26 HWY, since I can squeak 23-24 out of my 3G.

The part most people fail to acknowledge is that if the the manufacturer can reduce displacement they can reduce emissions and make the EPA happy on paper. No one really cares what you see in terms of real world fuel economy. So it doesn't really matter if the new highlander gets better MPGs with the new turbo as long as Toyota stays in their favor.

Right if they reduce emissions it keeps the EPA happy, think the new turbo 4 GM twins gained very little on the average MPG too.
