Found nail in tire and used patch kit from auto parts to patch it up, it worked fine for a week or so then started leaking again. So I tried putting fix a flat in and it has not leaked since putting it in a week or so ago.
Now from what i know fix a flat is supposed to be for emergency use but since the tire already has a patch in it ( one that is know to leak) but now also had fix flat sealant inside how long would you expect it to last?

Also if it does start to leak again then will i be able to use another auto parts patch to patch it up. Ive heard some say after you put in fix a flat sealant the tire cannot be patched after that.
What has your experience been with this??

It’s temporary, you need a proper plug patch.

Shops hate fixing it because it’s messy as hell. Also if you run the tire flat numerous times it’s going to have sidewall damage.

New Toyotas actually come with stop leak and a pump instead of a spare now. Again temporary.

By plug patch you mean what the tire shops install but they have to de-bead the tire?

Probably the one you rough up the hole with a point sander tool.
Then some rubber cement and a push thru plunger with a rubber plug

I ran a 35" BFG mud terrain for another 5 years with 7 plugs in one hole on a sidewall. It can be done but not recommended. Do an internal patch. If your strapped for cash, run it on the rear axle. good luck.

On a video plug patch looks like a big tack that they push through from the inside out of the tire, with the tire off the wheel of course. This looks more reliable since i think the centrifugal force on inside would keep plug seated against the inside of tire.

Yes, dismount, looks like a tack.

it’s the safest and most reliable method.

I had "ride on" in my old tires for 40k miles.
i finally had new tires installed. The guys in the shop were confused when they saw white goo in the tire and every tire had multiple nails or screws in them.

The ride on was definitely working.

    https://www.ride-on.com/

I had it in my motorcycle tires as well and after a few miles, it balanced out until the bike sat for more than a few days. But after a few miles again, it would balance out.

    None... yet.
I don't get lucky very often with repairs, i.e. if anything can go wrong, everything does go wrong, BUT... when I do get lucky, it's with my tire repair. Been using the Slime Tire Plug kit on pick-ups, SUV's, and motorcycle tires for years and never had a problem.

Replace the tire. Many shops won't touch a tire that's had stop leak put into it. It's a mess.

A blow out at highway speed isn't worth the few bucks you are trying to save.

If a stick patch is already been installed but is leaking could an inside plug be installed stil? I know usually they patch up to 1/4 " holes and the nail that came out of the hole was not 1/4 big.
So i would think tire shop would be able to take my patch out and still use their inside plug ??

I've used a plug kit many times without ever an issue. I keep a kit in my truck for trail or road trip repair possibilities. Almost all my plugs have been used to help others though. If you have air with you, it can be pretty easy to plug a tire on the vehicle, air up and go. Once you get a Load Range D or E tire, though, they are tougher to plug, but they are also more flat resistant.

I don't ever use Slime or fix a flat, they just make a mess inside the tire and rim.

If you get a puncture near the sidewall or on it, the tire has to be replaced.

What you installed is called a plug. To install a patch, the shop would unmount the tire from the wheel, remove your plug, and install the tack-shaped patch from the inside. The shop may refuse the work or charge extra labor for cleanup because of the sealant, but that is up to the individual shop; no one on TW can tell you with certainty.

You can run the tire as-is until it leaks again, at which point the tread life may be down to a point where the tire isn't worth fixing.

Why replace the tire if the hole is nowhere near the max diameter that a shop could put an inside plug/patch on??
You like not getting moneys worth out of a tire??

Throw that gooey messy tire twizzler repair kit away and do yourselves a favor and get one of these. It's plugs your tire from the inside without dismounting the tire. Lasts the life of the tire and I've been using it for years.

That fix a flat goop is nasty, it rarely works and you're basically driving around with liquid sloshing around inside the tire. When it comes time to do some type of patch it'll be a pain in the ass to get all that crap out of there and get the inside of the tire to dry out enough so a patch will even stick

The plug kits (from the outside) work fine as long as you use rubber cement and light it on fire to dry it out. Everybody uses the paste to slip the plug in, but the paste stays wet and you risk having the plug slip back out.
