Of course, that was before Toyota posted a 2WD model with leaf springs. Now that line has been crossed, who's to say drum brakes won't reappear on the base trim? :stirthepot:

Toyota is a notoriously cheap company. There's no way they'd have rear disc brakes on some models and drums on others. But I see what you did there...;)

They have pretty high quality builds for a notoriously cheap company.

Drum brakes are a few dollars cheaper per vehicle than disc brakes. That's why Toyota went with them for 2nd gens (and told Motor Trend as such in mid-2004). If they re-use the existing 2nd/3rd gen drum brake parts and incur no additional tooling costs, well...

I’ve put a total of over 350k miles on two 1st gens and an 88 Xtra Cab and never wore out a set of rear shoes.

Have rear disc and drum parking brakes on my 96 LC. 265k never changed them.

Is it that unusual that Toyota would make different drivetrain and suspension trims after making the five lug Tacomas?

And I’m all for a poverty package that is substantially cheaper than the highest trim model. I’m not happy that they are getting rid of the suicide doors because what’s the point of having an access cab if you can’t easily get to the space behind the front seats?
