Hello everyone. I recently joined the 3rd gen tacoma crew after many faithful years from a 3rd gen 4runner and Hate that this my first post on the forum. I recently purchased a 2017 TRD Off-Road MT w/99,600 miles on it, couldn't be happier, a legit dream come true, almost felt like it was meant to be. There was one problem, after all the papers were signed right before I left the lot, I did a walk around and noticed a small leak from the transfer case, the dealership agreed to fix it and assured me it was safe to drive until I brought it back. I picked it up last Thursday and brought it back the following Wednesday(yesterday for me). How serious is me having a leak and was it a bad idea to drive with it?

The previous owner had a gopro mount on the windshield which makes me worried he ripped the hell out of 4WD causing the leak. He also left me a Tool CD which was pretty cool, seems like a pretty rad dude.

Anyway please help and here she is(if I did this right):
Ps: if you're the previous owner you're not getting your Tool CD back

Where exactly is it leaking from?
If it’s a yoke seal it’s easy fix
    If it’s a case split, it’s a pain

The GoPro mount was a standard feature.

    Picture of the leak?

There's 100k on that drivetrain, probably leaking from a seal. All bets are off after 100k.

Your truck is too clean to have the PO tear up the TC, trust me plenty of us beat the shit out of our trucks and not leaking from it but seals do go bad.

Noticed after taking photo there was a lot on the bolt at the top of the picture, you can see a small drop on the black pan, wiped one off on the opposite side

Welcome to the forum. For a 17 the underside looks really nice. I think that it’s fine to drive until the dealership fixes the leak.

If they’re going to fix it, then you’re good to go. Great 2017. I love mine .

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Nice clean looking ride, as long as the dealership is taking care of the problem - good.

Go Pro mount was standard on the 2017, which happens to be the best year BTW as it doesn't have the TSS system and still has both bed compartments.

    3 pedal job too

If you want to find out where spray all the leaking fluid off with brake cleaner and then you can find/see where its coming from.
Case, plug (s), and/or front seal by driveshaft as see its wet (any fluid by rear driveshaft seal). If can't get too for awhile pull the top fill plug (not bottom drain!) on transfer case and see how low the gear oil is.
Fluid would drip down and get blown towards rear as you drive. At 100k time to change all the cases/diffs anyway. Good deal if the selling dealer fixing free so relax and let them do it.

Welcome to the 2017 DCSB MGM mafia, there's no turning back now. <vindieselfamily.gif>

I kinda miss my gopro mount but a rock chip took my windshield out at around 5k miles and the Fuyao replacement windshield doesn't have it so, cherish your piece of vehicle marketing history.

Also I'm with muddog - get up in that thang and find where that leaks actually coming from. I thought my timing cover seal was a power steering leak. I thought my failed Wix oil filter seal was god knows what. Leaky fluids like to travel around on these things. It doesn't look drastic and as long as they are fixing it, eh, you're good to go.

Make sure the dealer uses Toyota Transfer Case Fluid. My local dealer does not keep it in stock, so I ended up buying it online which cheaper than if my dealer ordered it.
