Agreed. I have the underhood on the fender edges starting. Hope you read my post on my RAV (#317) which explains how the process of testing and repainting works IF the vehicle is accepted for the campaign.

It is also 041 which I'm not sure is on Tacomas, but on other models like my RAV.

041 is primer, 040, then pearl, then clear. The root cause is 040 not adhering to the primer. So if a panel fails anywhere, that whole panel takes stripping to bare metal and starting over.

Went back and read your post, thanks.

Questions: on the RAV did it turn out to be just the rear doors they repainted or did they find more with the paint test?

I wonder if a repaint done on a Tacoma before addition to the program must be done by a dealer to be eligible for reimbursement later.

What is up with all these dealers submitting to Toyota and getting coverage for Tacomas even though they’re not part of the program? I mean, cool, but why then do I get the cold shoulder from Toyota? Why the inconsistency?

I wonder if it’s possible that I got only one bad panel and that’ll be the end of it. Paint is pristine everywhere else except the one part of the one rear door along the window. Which only continues to grow.

I think from reading his post #317 they found issues everywhere EXCEPT the tailgate.

Tailgate, front bumper and spoiler passed. Tailgate metal, others plastic.

I paid to paint spoiler due to other damage (bird) while with PO.

I received a Toyota notice for a service campaign and thought it was going to be for this since I wasn't expecting any, but it was the fuel pump one. What a tease. :annoyed:

I just saw this post, and wondered why a paint color, such as super white, that's been used since at least 2001, should start having issues now.? I have a 2005 Tacoma in that color, and the paint has been fine. Even places where I've dented it on rocks/trees have not peeled. I do keep it waxed. I guess manufacturers change the chemistry sometimes?

Based on the research I’ve done, Super White has always been an issue on lots of other Toyota models. Look up Customer Support Program ZKG. Toyota knows Super White has issues with the paint disbonding from the base layers, they just refuse to update the support program for Tacomas. Obviously not all Tacomas have it, so it’s a running theory that the build location has something to do with it (a lot of the effected trucks have VINs that start with 3, indicating a Mexico build).

It's not a wax issue. It's a paint to primer adherence issue. Some get lucky, some not so much.

I expect to order a new 2024 Tacoma when they become available. At that time I'll try to choose a light non white non metallic color, if one is available. If not, I'll cross that bridge then & hope I don't fall off. Thank you for the information guys.

I checked my VIN. It starts with 3. And my 2017 is peeling down to the bare metal in several places.

Very unusual. Usually the primer is exposed, but still well bonded. Of course the primer is a gray steel color........ If it doesn't rust the first time it's wet, it's the primer.

I'll take a closer look when it gets here. Hopefully it is just the primer. But on the roof I've noticed several real small spots that look like rust, even though the paint has not peeled there. I'm thinking that since it will be parked outside here I might get the "rust" spots taken care of, and then just wrap it (although I do love it in white).

Just dropped the truck off at the body shop for repaint of the left rear door.

The peeling has spread quite a bit from the original centimeter square area, here’s how it looked on drop off:

    IMG_4588.jpg IMG_4589.jpg

I believe Toyota will add Tacomas to the existing program and will hold on to photos and the repaint receipt for later reimbursement. If other areas of the truck peel later I’ll deal with them as they come up. In the mean time I’ll do what I can to continue to pester Toyota via emails, calls and letters.

I just put a deposit on an Ice Cap 2023 OR MT. I’m getting it for MSRP. It’s Baja built. Maybe time to ask for the deposit back? I know issue should be resolved by 2023 but not sure I want to chance it.

I looked at the paint ID and Ice Cap is listed as 040 Super White 2. That scares me a bit.

    Door repaint complete, looks great.

However…they elected to only repaint down to the body line just above the rock guard, because the rock guard can sometimes be difficult. They then clear coated the entire door. Unfortunately there was a light scratch just below where they stopped the repaint, and now there’s clear coat over it. The shop offered to fix it, which would probably require a repaint. It’s completely aesthetic and difficult to notice unless you’re looking for it. Thoughts?

If the job was supposed to be for a repaint of the entire door but they stopped short and clear coated the entire thing w/o asking you, then I'd have them redo it if it bothers you.

I also have super white 2018 Tacoma made in Mexico and have paint peeling around driver side rear door window. Went to dealer and said no recall and emailed Toyota engagement and said can’t do anything. I think Toyota will lose many loyal customers like me because they won’t Make right. Obviously a certain paint issue so no reason to only cover certain models and not Tacoma.
