Coolant Crossover back of engine replacement

mine goes in the shop next week. i am surprised to see they remove the transmission to get at it, i thought they removed the top part of the motor. see write up. first time i used the extended warranty that expires in Oct.

 

It sucks to change, some guys don't have the dexterity.

I've yet to replace one somehow, but what I would do is tilt the engine upwards with a jackstand on the trans creating more space. *also a bear trap for your hand if it fails*

 

Only 28K miles, oofta!

 

The shop the OP is using pulls the transmission.
Are you working from the top with the trans in?

 

Again havent done it, but no one removes anything in my shop. They suffer and do it in the truck.

Ideally remove engine during timing cover reseal and rear main reseal in distant future.

I've always found ways to make more space. So i'd tilt.

 

Is this a campaign to replace a plastic part with a (hopefully) metal part? AGAIN? (or previously metal part on an earlier year?) I'm asking because I believe my son had to do this on his 2005 2.7 liter 4 cyl for the by-pass pipe which runs all the way around the back of the motor. My question is why haven't they learned their lesson yet? Plastic parts are failing across the model lines. So are things like rubber parts for things like oil-cooler lines which take out an entire engine when they fail. The fix is a metal replacement part. Why do they do this? Makes no sense. Maybe it's just me.

 

no, replacement is plastic as far as i know. they said the leak occurs at the O rings where it mates to the heads. when i found mine that's where all the pink buildup was.

 

ok: Good. Thank goodness for that pink crust-producing Toyota coolant: it's a disaster early-warning alarm!

 

Repair complete, truck got trapped at dealer over memorial day weekend, sucked, since i took it in on the tuesday before.
they also did the 3rd brake light recall.
i urge anyone with a 16-18 that has not had this issue already addressed to crawl under the passenger side behind the front wheel and shine a flashlight up behind the motor and check. look for pink corrosion
it was only that someone here brought up this issue about a month ago that got my off my ass and to check mine.

WOW! Thank goodness for the extended warranty. 9 hours of labor on your 3.5 2WD. I wonder how much more labor on a 3.5 4WD?

 

I agree. Certain model Corollas have a coolant bypass that sits near the battery. Super easy to replace PLUS the replacement part is metal & available at most auto part stores. Why Toyota (or any aftermarket company) has not done the same for the 3.5 is beyond my understanding.
