Morning folks anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new Tacoma, sometime this week. I know it has been covered in a lot of threads but was wondering if folks could give me some feedback on the best tonneau covers for the Tacoma. Also preference of hard top or soft. Thanks in advance and look forward to reading the responses.

    Welcome!

I got a lomax (TW thread w discount) and was happy with it. The DiamondBack is superior for theft and hauling and that’s what I would do now (casually looking for one for my ‘05). BakFlip is another solid contender many like. Also some retractable options.

Soft is less expensive but in my opinion you get what you pay for.

If you have a shortbed, do some math as a 5’ bed up the the rails is not a ton of storage. I ran short on one family trip and swapped to a leer shell. RSI smart cap is another popular shell, as are ARE and snug top. Sometimes easy to find local / used as guys swap out the setup a lot.

Softoppers are popular too, can push back against the cab and quickly have a full open bed.

    Enjoy the research.

The oem tri fold ones are great if you can find one second hand, I've heard good things about Dimond back

Note OEM requires permanent modifications to the plastic bed rail caps. That’s the #1 reason I’d avoid them. Unless you can easily acquire a cheap set of caps. Lots of guys try to “sell” an OEM tonneau for cash plus buyers rails and I haven’t seen many take them up on that. Also, the Oem tonneau looks like fat Albert compared to aftermarket options.

OEM bed mat though, buy from the dealer. Everyone agrees that is the most important first mod :)

Yeah you have to swap bed side covers, it's supper easy took me less than 10minutes to swap everything over
