It’s official, the 2023 is the Tacoma to have

Not even talking $hit about the new looks (in fact, I’m sure they will grow on all of us, just as every past model change has).

But Hybrid-turbo-2.4-four cylinder-8-speed trans and god know what other “technology”?

4th Gens will be cutting their teeth on new platform problems for years. They’ll get this all figured out a year or two before the 5gen comes out.

Hard pass.


Toyotas were the apex of quality/reliability/affordability in the 90’s. Slow roll downhill from there.

 

Lol. Years of bitching by TW about the third generation's anemic minivan engines, schizo 6 speed transmission, bad mileage, etc. And when a solution is presented... (turbo, hybrid, etc) nope... not good enough... Archie Bunkers come out in full force! Good Lord...

 

The new Taco is the reason I’m here. All the reasons you listed above, specifically the horrible 6 speed auto was the main reason I stayed away.

Loving everything that was presented with the new Pro! Can’t wait to pair it up with my 4Runner, best of both worlds!

 

Clearly the Manual V6 has more top end than the 2.4 L turbo with a manual. That is kind of funny to think about.

If I hadn't bought mt 6MT TRD OR last year, I'd be all over that Pre-Runner.

 

The 3rd gen was always crippled by its motor and transmission. I really dislike modern v6/transmission set ups from all makers. Pretty much every late stage v6 lacks low end torque and drives like a Honda Odyssey. All these systems were intentionally crippled to squeeze 1-2 mpg to meet CAFE standards and performance suffered as a result. Good for a minivan, mid sized SUV or sedan, pretty bad match for a truck that needs low end torque.

Because of this I’ll always consider the 3rd gen a placeholder until they were able to make this move. And of course the 4th gen is a placeholder until they go full electric. But still I’m glad Toyota finally arrived at something that at least on paper seems like a legit high performance truck.

Being the last gas model Toyota will make, I’m betting this will be the Tacoma to have. And the 2nd and 1st for classic model enthusiasts.

 

Rather have the new 70 series pickup.

Agree purely aesthetics the 3rd gen is the iconic styling. May turn classic like the pre Tacoma Truck. But what a vehicle looks like only goes so far in my book.

 

No cupholders, Carplay, airbags or other wizardry. Lousy MPG & harsh on road trips.

Do you expect to use that thing as a truck or something?

I have to agree with you on the motor, tranny, power output of the Tacoma, was really not a strategic move to approve the product, but the product was caught up in the nonsense of the times, trying to make something it wasn’t ever meant to be.

I’m not sure I consider the third GEN a placeholder, though, I agree with you it’s going to be a classic Toyota because of the fact, it’s the last survivor on this platform, making it somewhat of a true classic Toyota.

I think the fourth GEN is a huge step forward in the evolution of the automobile, and how auto makers are serving their customer.

I was incredibly happy to hear Sheldon talking about how they arrived at the decisions that they make, and what went into the truck. I’m a researcher by trade and actually passed up a job with TRD earlier in my career because of their culture and working styles, but I understand much of that has shifted and clearly we have seen Toyota paying attention to the market and how many of us want to use our truck.

 

Cup holders? Don’t be drinking in my truck.

CarPlay, ok I’ll give you that. I pretty much can’t function without CarPlay and have added it to my all older vehicles.

MPG, turbo diesel! Great MPGs

Air bags, I’ve been known to remove those anyway. (…Allegedly)

This feels like 2005 all over again when the 2nd gen came on line. Not only an entirely different platform but a massive leap in performance and tech compared the predecessor. Way different vibes from 2015 which at least to me felt like a facelift+.

While the 2nd gen made the 1st gen look archaic, the 3rd gen mostly made the 2nd gen look outdated. I consider this a similar leap to the 2nd gen.

 

I’d take the 4th gen over the 3rd gen. I doubt it’ll be 100% perfect out the gate but it seems they’ve learned / listened to the complaints of the gen 3. A lot of transmission headaches and constant shifting go away when you have significantly more power.

 

Lots of fighting for proper gearing and lack of power in the 3rd gen!

The 4th gen power and transmission upgrades alone are already worth it! Now we also get updated tech. Win win!

Me thinking about technology:

 

I have watched just enough of the introduction and first look videos to notice not much is being said about the 8 speed auto transmission. I would like to see what improvements they made to correct the 6 speed issues.
