Nobody hangs out in my shop with me, so I use tools that work. I am not afaid of Ryobi or Harbor Freight gear as long as they work. I like to impress people with my work not my tools.

I can’t see the image but I’m in the same camp as you. I rock ryobi and harbor freight tools. I’ve got a few expensive items but still none are the big brands. I feel the same way.. I make cool shit with cheap tools.

I have some stupidly expensive tools that really allow me to do awesome work and right next to them are a bunch of inexpensive Ryobi tools that also allow me to do awesome work. I like ALL of my green tools!

Dryfit of what I hope is good enough for a weeding present. Walnut/Red-oak insert, soft maple outer. One side piece needs shorted by 1/8th in, tapered from edge back about 1/2way, maybe all way, to minimize appearance of slope

Still on the fence about finish that is also hardened and minimally food-ready. Odie's Oil is recommended by woodshop, other like Walrus Oil, or even Furniture Butter. The wood grain has to show and I do NOT want yellowing later.

Question for the group here. When you first started woodworking or turning or whatever your field, did you know what you wanted to make immediately or was it a process of discovering what you wanted to make? And if so, how long did it take?

 

All of the above. It is just a labor of love, and disappointment, and more love, and finding creative ways to fix mistakes.
Just like raising kids.

Looking for advice, not so much prise as I only deserve a grade of B- and most of that for engineering.

Building a serving tray, outside is soft maple ... intentionally used a hardwood. Near side had clean section of the baord ... all white-wood. Far side was end of board ... discolorations (due to weather? water? ... try it anyway as I was running out of maple). The engineering of the end-shapes, of the cut handles ... not bad I think for just spade-bits, drill, circular saw, jigsaw.

The problem is the sloping sides of the handles ... cross-cutting hardwood is my bane. Even attempts to refine my circular-saw cuts with 60T ultra-file blade leaves circles that cannot be sanded out easily. Enough pressure to remove those circles hides the end-grain under a haze. And the way the butcher block oil absorbs into the end grain is sad (send picture ... that is NOT a shadow). Jigsaw with a clean-cut blade and scroll-saw blade leave surfaces too rough to sand out.

Am I just too damned incompetent to do clean cross-cut on hardwood or is there some method I have yet to try that will allow it?

The only option I can think of next ... I will try this later ... mount the side pieces vertically with bracing, set circular saw at the slope angle and cut along the 2 inches of the slope edge.
