Hey all, I’m a new guy here. Just purchased my very first Toyota (I’m a Chevy guy). I have a 2006 4.0 Pre Runner with 232k miles. (Always wanted a yoda ) I purchased the truck from a friend and it’s been well taken care of to say the least. However, as all vehicles as the miles accumulate so do the issues.
I’m having transmission shudder at about 45 to 50 mph that doesn’t last long but recently started happening. What the main issue has been is setting at a red light or stop sign, brake applied and in drive it will “jump” if you will like someone bumped me from behind. So I joined this forum to help me along the way to handle these issues as they arise. Plus I wanna be in a cool kid group As I said I’m a Chevy guy and I’m mechanically inclined. I grew up in a mechanic shop along with dirt track and go kart racing, worked on all of my own vehicles from motors to transmissions. Now that I have a Toyota I’m totally unfamiliar with these transmissions. Apologies for the long post but any advice on where to start would be appreciated. I’m looking into changing the filter and fluid to see if that might help out. Or is it even worth it from the symptoms I’ve described? If anyone has advice or could tag me in a thread dealing with these symptoms you be the bestest. Again,I appreciate y’all look forward to being a part of Toyota World.

    4 run, 2 don't
    Check your driveline?

    Grease things up?

    Carrier bearing needing replacement?

These autos hold up great and are very stout.

I’ve replaced all u-joints and driveshaft center bearing. All of those needed attention bad, truck set for a bit. When jacked up the rear end does have some play between the ring gear and pinion but it’s very little play. The bearings themselves are fine however. I’ve pulled the differential plate and inspected and everything seams fine from bearings to gears(no shavings in the diff oil) other than the small play it has. So that’s why I was asking about the transmission. Maybe a shift solenoid getting stuck here and there, torque converter or just a simple service may be needed??I’m just wanting to stay on top of this before I have to pull the transmission to send it for a rebuild.

For the surge at a light, it seems normal from what I’ve read. Consensus is the A/C clutch kicking in and the electric throttle bumping the revs rather aggressively. Turn off A/C (if you can in summer) and see if it continues.

Whenever it does this at red light it’s pretty aggressive. The A/C has been off , I’ve tried numerous thing’s before being stumped and joining the forum. I appreciate your time and help. P. S the throttle does fluctuate when a/c clutch is engaged a few 100 rpms but I don’t see it giving me that “jar while stopped and in drive

Happens to me too. Does your truck by chance have the hydraulic assisted brake booster? Mine does and behaves exactly how you described. When driving and coming to a dead stop, after about 5 to 10 seconds on the pedal the truck will lurch forward and it does feel like someone rear ended me lightly. I dont notice any difference in the brake pedal, like it doesn't feel spongy. I bought my 2012 brand new with 5 miles on the odometer and it started being noticeable about 4 years ago. I exchanged the fluid in my brake reservoir and bled all 4 brakes till new fluid was coming out, about 2 large bottles worth, more than 32 fl oz but less than 64 fl oz. I bled for a while until the wife got bored on the brake pedal. With all that said and done, it doesn't happen nearly as much but it still does it on occasion. I cant say definitively if the brake bleeding improved the situation but I did notice an improvement after it was done so I anxiously await to see your thoughts on it too.

Interesting @JustAddMud . I’ve felt a sensation similar to what the OP has described since new in my ‘06. I do have a hydraulic brake booster, and I’ve flushed the system a few times, but never with TechStream. That’s supposed to keep the ABS module active and flush it as well. Maybe a trip to the dealer next brake job…..hmmmmm.

    i recently changed pads
i recently changed the pads and shoes(was getting squeaky) but when I do breaks I just squeeze the calipers and pistons in to charge them and check the fluid afterwards. I’ll admit it was pretty dark so I’ll give what you’ve suggested a shot. My Tacoma has a vacuum assisted booster, which I have checked for a leak to see if that could’ve been what’s causing it and all was good. I know as a Chevy guy the 4L60E is like the worst transmission ever designed and with that mentioned I’ve experienced similarities with my Tacoma far as shudder and the “bump forward” when stopped while in drive. I’ll bleed my brakes and follow up with you. I appreciate your advice

I done a full inspection on it before I bought it, friend or not I do it for the sake of my wife driving it and I’m not taking chances. Sometimes things happen people just forget to mention ya know. Anyway, the shocks, leaf springs and the suspension in general is in good shape. It needs a rack n pinion replaced before long because while cruising around 5 mph down my driveway you can hear and feel that it’s loose. The dust boots are shot as well but no leaks. It does have 232k miles so I’m not fussing about it lol. However with that many miles that’s why I’m really concerned it could be the trans. I appreciate your time

Well upon my latest drive in my yoda , if you get on the throttle a little harder than usual the shudder happens right before gears change and does it through 3 out of 5 gears. So this is another thing telling me is something with the transmission. Stuck shift solenoids??

Torque converter shutter. Happens to most of them with infrequent transmission fluid changes. I'd change the fluid and go from there. Either a couple spill and fills, or a fluid exchange, your choice. I had an '09 that had infrequent fluid changes and nothing really solved it unfortunately. Also had a 2014 with plenty of transmission services and it was just fine. That should tell ya something.

All about keeping them serviced, he never showed me proof of all the maintenance he done but the truck itself is in wonderful condition. Apparently he handled everything but servicing the transmission. I’m going to do a fluid change and if it smells like wire = electrical problem, burnt or black is a mechanical problem. Anyway I’ll do my deal and follow up on this thread and hopefully it’ll help the next guy. I appreciate y’all’s time.
