I never do trades. Dealers will start at msrp, or above when you do. Just going to the dealer with nothing to trade in, you'll get the same deal. Better to sell private, and start with some real cash in your pocket.

If you have a trade of exceptional quality and the dealer knows they can sell it quickly, you might get a decent price. Otherwise 99% of them are going to try and steal it from you. They don't want stuff sitting on the lot. I suggest detailing it before you take a tour of dealerships.
Better yet, detail it out and sell it privately. It's a pain in the ass but worth it.

IMO I’d never buy the first two years of any new model. It will take them that long to work out the kinks and for any issues to show up.

If you want the best value for your truck sell it yourself. Dealers make a good chunk of their profits off trade ins. They'll never pay you what it's worth.

    "Sell" your truck

    And

    Buy your new one

Do the actions independently and Use the best process for each

You want to find as many buyers for your truck as possible. Do the CarMax, carvana, Edmunds, kbb, every one. Then do every dealer you can. Walk in, say you are looking to sell your truck and want to see what they will give you. Don't lock into being a confirmed buyer, yet

Then go haggle on the new truck. Don't confirm your trade, don't have it evaluated, just deal on the new truck. Do this to multiple dealers and use offers off one to get a lower price at another. Maybe do this digitally.

THEN tell the dealer you are buying from that you are trading, and use that best trade in number you got previously.

Best case, you pushed your trade higher by bouncing off multiple buyers. And you also got the lowest price on the newest truck. On top of that, in many places if you trade and buy at the same place you only pay sales tax on the price DIFFERENCE, which can be thousands in your pocket.

Best sale price, best buy price, and less taxes
