Why?.Why?..Why???

Why there is no doors on extended cab taco??? what's the logic behind this idea. Are we going back to 90's?.
Why build an extended cab truck and eliminate the doors?
Why would they take away functionality and practically from a new truck.?
I really was hopping to get a new design taco but looks like I will keep mine for a while.
Very disappointed, such a good looking truck.

i suspect the logic is cost and meeting epa requirements, mostly, while still offering a configuration that many commercial users prefer and some consumers as well. they probably threaded the needle on this one as best they could.

i would rather have doors but, i am glad to see they still offer this cab.

 

I had a 98 Extended cab. Loved it. Glad they brought it back. Looks great!

 

Only speculation I heard that made sense is side crash ratings.

Also may have been a way to help the bean counters keep entry models at a price target affordable to fleet buyers and trades.

And of course, in True Toyota fashion it could simply be to funnel you into a more expensive model.

 

The Access cab rear seats aren't very functional, but I do use them for our 6 year old.

I hope they make a ton more long beds to offset the lack of seats in the new Xtra cab.

5 foot beds are not very useful.

this is my current ride. extended cab never went away. it just got more practical with extra doors.

 

I think because of the addition of a B-Pillar, you will also be able to safely store weight on the roof. But the worst is when you need to store something that is 18"x30"x45". You now can't.

Two things according to Tacoma Chief engineer Sheldon Brown: majority of owners delete the rear seats and stiffer body for crash safety.

All the R&D went it to those French Whore House Red ISO suspension seats…think they have an inch and half of travel. I would have long traveled the truck’s suspension instead for the extra 1.5”. over gimmicky seats but that is just me.

I still have mine, in the shop currently getting a fresh engine, much prefer my access cab 3rd Gen over it, so much easier getting stuff in and out. Use those clam shell doors multiple times a day.

Oh Toyota, 3 steps forward, and two steps back. Also pretty lame on their part, can’t get the link rear in the Xtra Cab. Some of us want a smooth ride, have no kids, and I know this part is going to pretty shocking for some, like to use that space behind the front seats for easy access to storage.

Fricken Toyota, always something. Almost bought a Ford this go around after owning Toyotas for 30 years, stuff like this just might push me to it. Always made some excuse putting up with some of their engineering decisions, losing my loyalty. Not that it matters much to such a juggernaut of a company.

Love the practicality of the F150 Super Cabs.

Well at least they didn't put 3 friggin doors like GM..... Oh look a rear door to get in the back seat, wait let me go around to the drivers side and get in. Uh no

 

And in 1996 it was a $400 "option" for that single door.
I ordered my '96 Silverado without that "option".
It was a suck job getting stuff in and out of the rear storage area even with the "sliding seats".

 

So extended cab and not access cab? No suicide doors? Solid rear no doors just a 2 door

The base Xtra Cab looks about 10X better than the uglier than sin Avalanche clone Trailhunter, it's got that going for it.
Unfortunately, I can't see buying one of the Xtra cabs either as I'd rather have hard to access rear seats and not use them than need some rear seats and not have them.
