Clear a single code to pass inspection

So I have the dreaded p0500 VSS code on my 05 Tacoma. I cleared all the codes and went to get inspected. It failed because it couldn’t read the engine and emissions info. Is there a way to clear only the p0500 code and not the emission data so the check engine light will go out and I can pass inspection?

Thanks. I’ll check the fuses before taking the instrument cluster apart and sending for repair. Unless anyone knows how to repair it to send the VSS straight to the ecu and bypass the cluster?

It hasn't been tried before that I know of but in theory it should work as the signals are identical as seen below.

You can try running a jumper wire from C9 Pin 6 (Red/Yellow) to C9 Pin 19 (Violet/White) at the instrument cluster and see what happens.

That’s the info I need. So pin 6 is the signal from VSS off the drive shaft and the output of 19 is the one that goes to the ecu? I thought it would be a different connector bundle. One for in. One for out?

On manual transmissions (pre 2012) it comes from the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission to the cluster, on automatic transmissions it comes from the ABS module which uses the rear ABS sensors to the cluster.
The cluster then sends it to all other modules the use it.

Different wires same connector, C9 Pin 6 (Red/Yellow) is speed input to the cluster and C9 Pin 19 (Violet/White) is speed output from the cluster to everything else.

Interesting. I have auto transmission and my abs sensors on the back wheels were covered in whiteish gunk and smelled like differential oil. I wiped off but may be more inside. Possible that this is the issue?

If your speedometer works and you don't have and ABS light then no, grrase and oil won't affect the sensors anyway. Metal debris on them can affect them but not grease and oil.

Ok, finally got around to jumping c6 and c19 on the connector to the instrument cluster. That resulted in the speedometer not working at all and no VSS Signal on the obd scanner. C6 was just red and not red/yellow. Not sure if 2005 had a different number?

    any other ideas?

You sure you had the right wire?
Otherwise check the SPD circuit as I outlined in the post I linked above, that's all I have on the operation of the vehicle speed circuit operation.

I connected a jumper wire directly on the instrument panel leads that went to the connector. Should I disconnect c19 from the cluster and connect it directly to c6 pin? I’m wondering if c19 has some impedance that is pulling c6 to 0 since the speedometer stopped working when I connected them together.

You could try it, in theory it would work if the cluster is what's affecting it but if another module is affecting it it won't work.

Ok. Tried again. Definitely doesn’t work. It makes my Speedo stop working altogether which doesn’t make sense does it?

Or do I really need to disconnect c19 from the connector all together while jumping it?

Ok, I clipped the wire 19 so it’s not connected to the cluster and just jumped to 6. It all works now and the light is off!! Thank you for the help!

Nice, good to know it's a viable option for a failed instrument cluster.

Will I thought I would try this work around. I jumpered 19 to 6 after cutting 19 loose. My plug looked exactly like the picture. I have an 05 with v6,auto,and 4wd. So far it seems to be working my only symptoms in the past that I knew of was check engine light and cruise control not working, I had never noticed if my 4wd worked when I had p0500 code. Time well tell if this solves my problem because it was intermittent, sometime multiple time a day and sometimes days between p0500 code.

If your cruise is quitting because the ECM is losing vehicle speed (P0500) but your speedometer always works then yes the bypass should fix both issues.
