I'm new to the Taco 4wd. When I shift into 4wd lo I get an audible alarm and flashing 4wd symbol. The alarm won't go away. Dealer says it's normal. Really? Any input? Thanks.

    Does shift to 4Hi work?
Did you stop and put the trans in neutral then turn dial to 4Lo?
If you did try it a few times and see if it unsticks. If no go there is a massive post on How to fix 4wd in the transfer case and front diff actuators.

Note you posted in the gen1 forum. Gen2 and 3 work the same.

To shift in and out of 4 low the truck must be in Neutral (AT) or clutch fully depressed (MT) and under 3 MPH.
If the alarm sounds when you attempt a shift you must return the 4wd knob to the previous postition and try again.

Thanks to both. Yes to 4wd hi and yes to shifting range in neutral. I’ll try the repeated attempt. Thanks for the link.
Didn’t mean to post on gen1. New here.
    Thanks for the hospitality.

A VERY slight roll of the vehicle sometimes is needed to get it into low as well.

The blinking 4lo light means that it is attempting to engage (or disengage) 4lo. Once the transition is complete, the light will stop blinking.

Transitioning to and from 4lo can be finicky. If there is enough bind up in the drive train, it will refuse to transition. Move a little bit and try again and try to be on a low traction surface.

Flashing means 4LO isn't engaged yet. When the 4LO light is solid and no beeping, you have found 4LO.

Since you're clearly too lazy here's the abbreviated version

    1-Get into 4Hi
2-Stop truck and go into Neutral
    3-Shift into 4Lo
    4-Put her back in Drive
    5-start wheeling

Reverse the procedure to get back into 4Hi, then back into 2wd

Why do you feel the need to insult people before helping them? Such unnecessary passive aggressive behavior!

Because this shit is literally written on the driver's sun visor, and again in the owners manual.

Toyota literally made it so you only have to lift your head up to learn how to operate 4x4

If people are too dumb or lazy for that, they shouldn't be owning vehicles

I know, its what makes this place thrive. But come on, OP has a total of 2 posts! Maybe wait until 10 posts before the douchery commences? :)

First, Just ignore the insults - it's probably because the the insulter isn't getting "any."

When I first got my Taco I thought my 4Lo was broken or that broke it because it really acted funny - noisy - loud clunks - blinking icon and finicky getting in and out of. Here is what is funny - I asked another Taco 4x4 Off Road lifted with BIG tires and bull bar owner I ran into at Sheetz (a gas station in NC) about it and he told me he had no idea that his was a, his words - "a grocery getter." Yeah, of course, I saw what was in the owners manual but that didn't explain the noisy - loud clunks - blinking icon and being finicky. So I went to the internet and there is was. The point being you will never know until you ask - which you did. So hopefully you are good2go.

This is a great and friendly forum - I have gotten a lot of good advice here but as everywhere there are always a few jerks.

One of the most hateful things Toyota ever did! Guess people were too lazy to use the old lever on the floor and lock their own hubs. Water over the dam, I can tell you this you have to use it even if you don't need it every so often. You really don't have to go any where even your drive way shift it in and out a couple of times high to low low to high. Generally it's only low range that screws up but I still switch mine in and out of high on the road.

Really the ESOF 4wd systems don't give alot of trouble but like you said you have to use them, if you don't then things get sticky and contact plates can lose connection.

The biggest flaw in Toyota's system (not sure about 3rd gens) is the use of the vent hoses on the actuators, those hoses get dry rotted over time and can come off allowing dirt and water to enter and destroy the actuator.

What I’ve learned about my truck is, I better be in the correct configuration before i need it. Because, like previously stated, sometimes you need to roll a little forward, or backwards or roll forward with a little turn in just to get everything all locked up. So, I can’t wait until I’m bogged to be trying to get in low and get the rear diff locked up, I need to get configured before I need it.

And what I’ve learned about TW is if I have a question, I’ll ask the question, but I’ll also add in all of the answers to the smart ass reply’s I can think of. For instance if I’m asking about the clutch, I’ll ask the question and then state my age, and experience, and that yes I know how to drive a stick, and then I would list all of the manual transmission vehicles I’ve owned over the years, and then I would say something like ‘If you don’t have anything productive to add to this conversation, please don’t waste your time or mine with a smart ass reply.”
This has worked for me in keeping the stupid, smart ass replies to a minimum.
