Make them buy you a new shock and possibly spring

Carefully drive it back over there and ask them to flip the perch around. Your spring is cracked though, that has to be dealt with too at some point

It's an embarrassing mistake for sure but 4 hours labor isn't unfair for install

The crack is rusty, it's been broken for a while. Just because they missed it doesn't mean they owe him a new spring

It is when a non mechanic like me with limited tools can do it on the floor of my garage in half that time.

They cost $800 in Canada? Ouch, I paid half that here in the states.

Yes I've heard that argument before. Unfortunately that's not how it works in a shop with bills and overhead costs. The book time is likely 1.5 hours per side in the front and 1 hour for the rears. Its also common to mark up labor when customers supply their own parts

That being said I completely agree the work was subpar and they completely spaced on the broken spring. But trust me, it's not one big huge gravy train out here for retail shops trying to keep the lights on when property taxes and operating costs keep going up.

People act like these mechanics are driving home in Lambos every day from scamming and overcharging

True enough, the dealership I worked at would treat it as the same because it's a safety factor and since you would have "worked with that part" it would come back as liability for us since we would of been the last ones to "work with the part"

I completely agree. Failing to mention an obviously broken part is almost as bad as breaking it yourself

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
It’s not damaged yet, but driving on it if the circlip fails it will be a junk shock

Start will giving them a call and showing/sending them the pictures and go from there. Buddy could of had some stuff going on at home and it could of been an honest mistake, a major one but nonetheless an honest one. Maybe they'll sort you right out with no fuss. It's their name and business reputation after all. Take your mind off it for night, nothing that can be done right now anyways. Have some of the electric lettuce and unwind

I also paid for an inspection as I am going on a long trip soon and wanted everything checked out before leaving. I paid an extra hour's labour for checking brakes etc...it is written right on my bill. They should have noticed the crack! Especially with the coil over out of the truck. Damn!

Again, this thread is a prime example of doing things yourself. Very few things can be more maddening; than paying for improperly done labor/work on your truck.

You are correct, but the shop owners are doing quite well if they are a good shop. Yes I know it is based off of book time which is sometimes a joke. This instance is a joke and I have seen book rates be severeley under time also.

Here is the Bilstein sheet. Hand to shop.

Make sure they installed the springs in correct direction as one end flat is top and other end has coil end that fits in that spring perch (see Bilstein sheet).
See note on sheet that incorrect install will damage shock.

OP...this is exactly why most of us are DiY as much as possible. I'm sorry you're dealing with this dude. For what it's worth...I purchased 5100's with 887 springs fully assembled from Wheelers Off Road for $515. I had 100% confidence that they would assemble correctly. Worth every penny.

It took me 8 hours. Rust and some more rust and some more rust. It is a pain. But i would question a shop if they didnt know how to install shock and springs.

    Just wanted update this thread…
So I pointed out the mistake with the installation to the shop. I expressed disappointment with the apparent crack visible in the pic of the spring. I started looking for a new set of springs, and I told the shop that if the spring was compromised in any way I would change both.
I brought the truck back there today, and the shop showed me that the “crack” was just in the powder coating and that the spring was solid.
They fixed the mistake, and now my truck feels so smooth! Drives great!
Thanks to TW for guidance here… in the end it has worked out.
