Check with your dealer first, there is a TSB for this and it might be covered under a extended warranty.

Yes, in Iowa. I spray fluid film every year on the frame and have no rust except a bit on the leaf springs (expected)

Check the tsb and when doing your fluid film pull the plugs underneath and get the inside of your rockers.

I did when it first started. My dealership is notorious about not doing tsb's unless I have some paperwork to show them. They didn't want anything to do with it, but offered me a "discount" to strip and repaint it. about $450 at the time. I might check with them again. I haven't seen anything. I called Toyota about a year ago and they stated 'nothing abnormal."

This is exactly why, when I wash and dry the truck, I'm sure to wipe down the door sills and jams.

Thanks. They always say, "We have to dig through all of them to find it and I don't see anything."

Oh, I do. In the winter I wash twice a week. Summer as needed. Wax twice a year and apply detailing spray most of the time. There is not a spot of rust on the rest of the vehicle. I bought new in 2016.

Damn. I guess I'll see what happens a few years down the road. Do you garage your Taco?

The issue seems to be a two part one. Toyota didnt rust proof that spot very well from the factory, but when salty water runs down the door seal, thats the spot it stops to drain out of the doorsill. First thing I did with my truck was to remove the seal and fluid film that area on both sides, then pulled all the plugs from the rocker panels and fluid filmed the whole inside of the rocker.

Garage kept always. Not a spot of rust on the frame. Live in a salt state. It’s a manufactured defect. It was corrected eventually. I’m pretty picky with my vehicles.

Took to dealer today. Service department thought it should be covered. Last time I tried I don’t think there was a tsb. They wanted to remove front and back doors and paint. Don’t think that would have fixed it without treated the drip edge with the plastic protectors. Thanks for all the help and link to tsb.

Well, thanks for everyone's help. Looks like my dealer contacted Toyota directly with pictures and they agreed to fix it. I was ready to give up. Had this thing since 2016 and going back and forth on new seat covers. My 16 came loaded with everything except leather seats. I'm talking heated seats with Jbl stereo, sun roof, but no leather. I have just under 50,000 miles and didn't know if I wanted to trade or keep. Only thing holding me back was the rust issue. It may not seem like a big deal, but here in the rust belt this can get bad over few years. So, looks like keep it and be payment free. Also in the market for some new upholstery.
