Trying to figure out why my rebuilt 2.7 5 speed 1996 Tacoma would start sounding like a diesel? I babied it for the 1st 500 miles and did a oil change had to change 2 idler pulleys due to belt squeals after rebuild. Any ideas of what it could be? Can’t pinpoint it with stethoscope?? Please help?

Any codes? Was it a business that did the rebuild?

This is where a nice scanner would come in handy...

run live data, both on the open system and then closed when warmed,
and see if anything pops......like one of the engine sensors are way off,
could be simple as one of them not grounded correctly.....

check all you ground points on the harness, and cab....

simple stuff 1st....ECT sensor comes to mind.

    Smoke test.....

It was a shop. Rebuilt my 3RZ not 100% on oil pump no lights are on sounds like a diesel. It was silent the first few days. I’m using Synthetic oil and changed it after first 500 miles. Would replacing Idler pulley 1 and 2 cause this? Maybe tighten the belts too much?

These engines are super simple.....all the engine sensors have to sing together in the choir...
after that....there's only a handful of things that go wrong..

lot of smart guys here.....I'm just the one who asks the stupid questions........

If you tighten the belts too tight it could damage the harmonic balancer if run for a while.....but probably only one thats fairly worn out already......push it over the edge...these can do some damage if not caught early.
It would be fairly obvious if wiggled....me thinks..

A dieseling would make me suspect timing or exhaust valves....

but a massive vac leak could do the same thing...

Not true. And ignore it if they don't like fragmented sentences. Keep posting.
