Hey guys, I have a 2021 OR and was hoping to get a new smaller key fob but the smaller ones do not retain the backup key. How many times have you actually used it? I know its always better to have it and not need it but I was just curious to hear from people that have had their trucks a while.

I've never used it, but I keep it in a magnetic box hidden against the frame just in case.

Been running the V2 Meso key fob which retains the key and is much smaller than factory. Knock on wood never had to use it.

how secure is the key in the fob? with some of the fobs people complain about the key coming out. I do like the look of these fobs.

Very solid lock up. I have no concerns about it coming out anymore than the factory fob.
I keep saying I need to buy the flaming asshole orange one for my spare key.

I believe that color is sold out, but like any Meso product sign up for emails and be quick on the draw as the products sell out fast and get released in drops. Well worth the wait as I have many of his products and all are top notch!

Piggie back question on this post:

Is it relatively cheap (under $50) to have the physical key copied to unlock doors/tailgate as a spare or would I have to go to a dealership and pay for the FOB/physical key if I want a spare. My used '19 only came with one key fob.

I take the small key from the fob with me while hiking or fishing. The disabled fob stays in the truck so I don't have to worry about losing or damaging it. As for a full size spare to hide on the truck, I purchased an Ilco LXP90-P key blank and had it cut at a local shop.

I just keep the small physical key on a keychain with my house keys, fuel cap key, tonneau key, and spare tire lock key. I don't have a power locking tailgate so the key is needed often.

I've never had the battery drained to a point that the remote didn't work, in any of my vehicles. Even when the battery was too weak to crank the engine, the remote could unlock the doors.

I'm not familiar with how the FOB works or doesn't work so forgive me if this is common knowledge, but you're saying that pulling the physical key out of the FOB will make it so the FOB alone will not be able to start the truck?

How to disable the fob (stop the transmitting function):

Need to disable the fob to be able to lock it in the vehicle. Though I suppose putting it in an RFID-blocking container works too.
