I had a problem with my taillights, ended up I bought new taillights and figured out it was the trailer wiring. When I removed that and installed the new/or old taillights everything works properly except the passenger side taillight and the passenger side license plate light. I do not have DRL’s it’s an 03 single cab 2.7 4x4. I have 12 boots between the contact for the twilight and the other common contact, but not the one for the taillight. I took away power to do continuity tests and the driver side taillight to the passenger side taillight will read 0 to the one common contact but to the other common contact on the passenger side taillight it reads 7 ohms. Between the driver side taillight common contact and the driver side license plate light 0 ohms.

The only grounds are the white/black common wires in the harness. Are those the wires you’re talking about re wiring? I did a continuity test from the main black/white ground that goes from the passenger side tail light to the harness clip under the drivers seat and the wire is fine it reads at 0 ohms.

My 03 has no ground that goes from the light to the frame/body of the truck.

Someplace you have a open circuit .

Just how did you remove the Trailer harness?

New or old tail lights as in brand new never installed or new to you used tail lights ?

Clean the right tail light socket with a fitting brush and some CRC.

I purchased new lights with new bulbs, I also have the ones I removed. I removed the trailer harness by unclipping the harness splice connectors and removed it from the truck completely, it’s been on the truck for 3-4 years.

Everything else works as it should, the marker lights, blinkers, brake lights, and the tail light and license plate light on the driver side. The headlights are also fine.

Toyota Tail light or After market?

You double checked the bulbs are good? the correct bulbs ?

Measure the continuity from the right tail light socket ground to a good chassis ground .

    you should get 0

Check all the plugs some place on the right side you have a corroded or a loose ground connection.

Since you did get a reading of 7 Ohms it is not completely open.

My buddy just brought his truck over same reading continuity. Aftermarket, wondering if the one housing is bad. Going to work on it tomorrow, have to do his window motor tonight. Really appreciate all the help!

I appreciate all your input, didn’t want to leave the thread without posting what I found to fix it. After pulling my dash apart and all the wiring from the rear of my truck, I read Bivouac’s last post and decided to try the drivers side OLD light and it was definitely the problem! I won’t try and save a few $ on eBay again for new lights. Thank you again to everyone who helped. I put the old light on the drivers side and the new light on the passenger side and everything works as is should.

Glad you were able to figure it out.

Now to figure out what was wrong with the light.

Are you able to return it?
